2018/19 Idrissa Gueye

Got two players around him in Morgan and Sigurdsson who go missing so he takes on the role of three players at times.

Yesterday he was our playmaker, trying to thread balls through, spreading the play, and getting on the ball at every opportunity.

That should've been coming from the two midfielders around him but they were nowhere to be seen.

He was trying to get the ball into Gylfi and the front men and was abysmal at it.

He then didn't have a good game going the other way either, which is normally his strong point.

But I agree with the general point. He shouldn't be the player making things happen. He's really bad at it.

I like Gueye, hes busy harasses and has legs, he however with Morgan slow the game down ponderously when quick ball through midfield is needed allowing the opposition to set up defensively.

Most of our goals we get this season will be over the heads of our midfielders.

Said this mid game. I'm sure you can pull the stats and see that he probably played more forward passes and created more than our so called number 10.

And that's not his job.

He’s a professional footballer - he cant kick it at a stationary target?

Of course he can, and he has done before. It's obviously not one of his strengths though and its not what he is in the team for. It's a really weird thing to question him over. It's like saying Leighton Baines doesn't score enough headers.

Said it for years.

Put him defensive midfielder on his tod. Tell him to hassle the living [beeeeep] out of any opposition player in possession in our final third and when in possession, lay it off to the nearest player.

We're diluting his game playing him alongside another defensive midfielder, and he's god awful on the ball. His talent is off it, so lets stop asking him to play box to box.

I think a big part of the problem is that he's staying very centrally when the fullbacks bomb up the pitch so it leaves the flanks very exposed and we get carved open with relative ease. It's one thing I feel like has never been addressed since Martinez's first season. When the fullbacks went up the pitch, Barry and McCarthy took their spot. Doesn't look like a lot of cover now.

This is a myth, and Gana certainly shouldn't be trying to 'take on his role'. Sigurdsson is as involved as any player in player week in week out, off the ball especially. He was constantly sprinting out to West Ham's full backs to close them down, not his fault that no one is going for the second ball.....

That's demonstrably untrue. Sigurdsson's average touches of the ball per game are very low for someone in his position. He does close down etc, you're right, but it's a fair criticism that he doesn't do enough to get on the ball. If he's not making himself available then it falls to others to try to act as playmakers, and they fail.

Mate even Carragher during the first half yesterday was lamenting the fact that we just don't get him involved enough in general. Maybe he does perhaps need to be moved back into the no. 8 next to Gana for now? though that's going to have to rely on someone taking up the no. 10 who isn't crap there in turn..

I might be wrong here but i'm pretty sure someone posted some statistics which show that his average touches per game have been pretty consistent at us, Spurs and Swansea - and always low. From watching him at the World Cup, it seems he has the same issue with Iceland. If he's consistently not involved a lot, it's surely a problem with him, not with the rest of the team not getting him involved. He played 'number 8' for much of the second half yesterday, and looked totally unsuited to it in my opinion.
