Praying Gomes can pass the ball forward/be an Arteta in his Everton pomp.

The difference it would make to this team to have a midfielder who can progress the ball from deep.

Again.

Gueye and Schneiderlin doesnt work.

Off the ball - diluted responsibility. Almost get in eachothers way.

On the ball - both cant pass the ball forward never mind create anything.

Nullify Everton's wingers/width, and we have nothing.

Told you!

13th Oct: Gana: “I am more defensive than Andre, he has to get higher and attack and if he goes I have to stay behind him and keep our defensive organisation.

Gana hasn't played any better or worse with Gomes than he did with Davies but the team as a whole functions better so his shortcomings aren't as noticeable. His level very rarely dips. The consistency in his game is seriously impressive.

Agree with this, maybe 1 in every 7 games he looks uncalibrated with his timing and positioning, but even then he doesn't dip below an "ok".

Gets my MOTM vote most of the time, he needs a song!

"He's here, he's there, he's every - bleedin' - where!, Gaaaaana Gueyeee!"

Hopefully you can surmise the tune somehow from that somehow, as I have no idea what it's from other than my dad used to sing it!

Okay maybe these aren't great, but at least my last half an hour at work is going quickly.. To the tune of 500 miles by the Proclaimers:

Well I know Gueye's gonna be
Gueye's gonna be the man who wins the ball from you
If you get smashed, well I know Gueye's gonna be
Gueye's gonna be the man who leaves his mark on you, (yeah) Yes!
And if you have it,
Yeah I know Gueyes gonna be Gueyes gonna be the man who's running back to you,

You can run 500 miles
But Gueye will run 500 more
Just to be the man who tracked a thousand miles
To get a foot in before you score!

Idrissa Gana! (Da da lat da!), Idrissa Gana (Da da lat da!) etc.

It still baffles me that Evertonians will watch us every week and see Gana make about 17 tackles and think that if we dropped him for someone who could pass a bit better we wouldn't miss what he does at all. This despite the fact that every time we've been without him since he's joined we've been worse in midfield. Maybe in time we will properly replace him but right now he's vital to what we do.

Look at Chelsea with Jorginho as a deep DM. Kante box to box (not ideal) and another more attacking central player.

Also compare to Arsenals Vieira/Petit or RS with Alonso Mascherano and Gerrard.

If we could sign the new Pirlo as a deep DM or keep Gana there then its a matter for the coach.

I don’t really think it’s as simple as comparing midfield partnerships/trios; you have to look at the system they play in as well as the team around them. Vieira/Petit were so effective in part due to ability but also because they had a brilliant back 4 and a system that fit.

Right now, Gana is nigh on indispensable with the way we play.

Well, id say look at Chelsea.

Theyve brought in Jorginho and kept him deep while negating Kante a bit by using him box to box.

I think if we bring in Gomes then the next logical move would be for a deep playmaker so we can alternate styles.

However with the potential amount of attacking central players e.g Vlasic, Sigurdsson, Dowell Bernard and Lookman it would be quite tricky for the balance.

I liked the idea of a deep Pirlo-esque playmaker with 2 box to box players but it would take a lot of movement in/out to happen.

Perhaps it will evolve to this...

Well Jorginho/Kante and Gomes/Gana are a similar pairing so don’t really understand the need to mess with that if it’s working for them (and us). Bringing in a deep-lying playmaker means we bench one of those which seems pointless, or we go with a midfield 3 dropping Sigurdsson, which is also pointless.

How do you mean theyre a similar pairing?

I love how suddenly some think Gana is playing well. He’s been the same player this whole time. Gomes doesn’t make him look better. He’s just an amazing defensive player and is a criminally underrated passer. He’s fine on the ball, too, if he does down, like another poster said, we are toast.

Kante/Gana - both destroyers albeit Kante is better on the ball.

Jorginho/Gomes - both technical CM’s. I’ve no doubt Gomes could slot into Chelsea’s team and do the exact same thing Jorginho does.

Sure but Kante is playing in a more advanced role for them as a CM to accomodate the system and Jorginho as the fulcrum.

No idea on Gomes, only ever seen him as a CM.

Its the system + Gomes.

He certainly doesnt look better in another system or alongside another DM.
