John Hurst , and Labby what a defensive pair they were I have said it before Stones has massive potential - if he becomes any where near John Hurst he will be great!
As for others out there who knows, but Stones has a main flaw winning the ball in air on crosses, to me he would make a great defensive midfielder!
I tend to think the same thing. Stones seem unable to read and defend crosses properly, even though he does seem to have a good footballing brain. Him as a midfielder in front of the defence could be a better position for him. But, if he leaves, Ill wish him the best, but wont really care how he does, or where he playes. If he stays, it will be interesting to see what Koeman can mould him into. Ronald, on paper at least, should be the best person to coch Stones in to becoming a real force.

Mate... NONE of our defenders can read a cross properly. Martinez for three years has done that...

Isnt there a John Stones thread...Say your farewells there eh. Trying to keep up with the hive of activity is hard enough without this

It seems to me that Stones is being dissed because of a couple occasions when he chose to play the ball out from the goalmouth rather than hoof it.
I agree that he may become a DM and he'll be a bloody good one, at that.
He would be pure class, think back to the 2nd half of last years semi final he looked classy leading the charge, it's his Ariel deficiencys that concern me if we keep him we need a collosial great in the air centre half!

Shame he goes to water underneath crosses ;)

Youre not wrong, but Stones is still clearly worse at it than Jags and Mori.

'clearly worse'. err... no, he ain't. wasn't it Jags and Mori who conceded from three crosses in 10 mins vs W Ham

Stop trying to re-write history mate. Stones does need to improve, but God, Mori's positioning (as much as I like him as a player) was awful at times last year and much worse than Stones'. For such an experienced player, Jagielka's was also shocking.

And that leads me to believe it was much more down to how the manager chose to defend (or rather, not defend) than the players themselves.

Yes, he was. And I agree, most of his issues were probably up to the coaching, but some of Stones mistakes were not coached into him or out of him, they were his and his only. No reason to sugar coat it, and make him up to something he isnt(at least not yet).
