Haven't been on here in a while but since it's St. Patrick's day (I'm still up so it still is) i thought I'd ask this question since it has bugged me for years. I'm an Irish Everton supporter. Before I supported us I supporeted United, Arsenal, Spurs, Newcastle, Liverpool, Leeds and Southhampton. I could never pick a team but finally ended up with Everton. I have never regretted it (somehow) but many people have tried to make me. I've been a supporter since 1994 and ever since I have been called a protestant because of the fact that I support Everton. This may not seem like much abuse to English people but in secondary school in Ireland it was along the lines of actually being accused of being a homersexual (sorry for the Simpsons joke). I never thought anything of it as most of it came from Liverpool fans (who are even scum over here) but today I was called a protestant again and nearly ended up getting arrested because of it. I may have over reacted but I was only minding my own buisness and tried to ignore them for a long time. It's as if it's a crime to wear an Everton jersey on St. Patricks day.

Ok I should probably get to the point at this stage. It's not that it means anything to me but I would like to know which Liverpool club would be considered Catholic or Protestant or whether such a division even occurs. It has never made a difference to me but would like to know anyway. I'm sick of people linking Liverpool (F.C.) to being Irish without good reason enough other than "John Aldridge decided to play for Ireland so they must be the Catholic club".

Thanks and sorry for boring anyone who reads this. St. Patricks day so a bit over sensitive bout that [Poor language removed].

i'm not from merseyside so i couldn't tell you, but you might find this to be an interesting read:
http://www.toffeeweb.com/fans/beingblue/religion.asp

from what i gather from reading that, theres evidence to show both, so you can't really say either club was protestant or either was catholic. everton had a large catholic following around the 1960's, so it seems like the pricks who teased you about it were full of it.

btw i totally support you getting back at the arsehole who egged you on, i can see how being called protestant would be hugely insulting to a catholic (the reverse is true as well i'm sure), so i admire that you stood up for yourself.

In a word no. The only clear differential is that we are God's people and they are the Devil's spawn. That's it.

Cant understand why Everton would be equated to being a Protestant:huh:

Tbh, the way its gone over the years, i think both of the Mersey clubs have a mix. Ive seen both Everton and RS supporters from each background and some even have sympathies with Celtic and some with Rangers. I think its impossible to class one as sympathetic to one religion and the other club to another.

What perplexes me about those divvies who were ripping this piss out of you though is their skewed opinion on Everton being supposedly Protestant. Of course, there are many Protestants in Liverpool who support us but equally, Everton always used to enjoy a noteable support from Irish immigrants in Liverpool and we still have quite a following over in Ireland.

Seems to me those fella's you referred to just jump on the bandwagon of supporting a top 4 club and really dont know their history.

evertonians are born

There doesn't really exist any sectarian affinity.

However, back in the 80s it was common for Blues to wear Celtic colours along with their blue, and Reds to wear Rangers colours, along with their red. Therefore, Everton had a catholic influence, and Liverpool a protestant influence.

Also, as mentioned earlier, back in the 60s Everton had a large number of Irish catholic support.

However, both Everton and Liverpool stem from a protestant background. And both clubs have a large number of protestant and catholic supporters. What religion you are, doesn't really come into it.

In other words, your mates don't know what they're talking about.

Mate those comments are really not positive at all it sounds to me that you are a bit over sensitve about being banded a protestant or a catholic especially the Protestant/Homosexual comparrison its my expeirence that the rifts of all old for many are heeled and the stigma each would feel and being branded one or the other has thankfully become irrelevent.

What doesnt help is even airing the subject ths giving it validity, and the way you reacted by almost getting arrested does nothing except open old wounds of bigtory and make the fact that goading you into reaction is quite simply and easy thing and as such most likely to be done again. St Patricks day isnt about nailing your coulors to a sectarian divde, but a day of national celebration, having a few pints and being proud to be irish wheather your catholic, protestant, black, white, green or monkey or man. Its a pity you cant enjoy the day without reacting in such a negative and sectarian way even acknoeldeing coments made about the sectarian divide scares me to think that the bad old days could return with people like you and those who made the comments, so easy to jump into a violent reaction.

Personaly i couldnt give a toss and im Irish and Catholic and proud to be both.

In a historica sense Everton was traditionaly the catholic club in Liverpool but thankfully neither club in Merseyside is considered Catholic or Protestant in contempory society!

P.S. Grow up!

D/D- this thread should be binned, acknowledgeing it gives credence to a sectarian divide!

Agree with all your sentiments there, well except the one I've highlighted in Bold. Historically speaking, Everton were a Protestant club (started by them, run by them etc). True, we had a large Catholic following post war and thats where our Catholic link stems from but our history stems back much further than that.
Thankfully, Everton and Liverpool hold no allegiance to either faith. And quite frankly is all the better for it. And anyway the Protestant and Catholic faith are not too far removed from each other (despite what some bigots may think). Both EFC and LFC have a Christian background, lets leave it at that shall we!!

As someone mentioned earlier, all the info you need is here
http://www.toffeeweb.com/fans/beingblue/religion.asp

For the record I dont believe in God and depise organized religion.

Does that mean you have a soft spot for disorganised religon?

We have in the last few years been seen to have closer ties with Rangers than Celtic. We've had players travelling in each direction and now Walter is their Manager which is probably why these ignorant deluded tw@ts think that religion has something to do with it.

Thanks for letting me know. Always thought it was not like Rangers and Celtic. By the way Neiler I wasn't making a comparison between being Protestant and Homosexual just saying that they were most common abuse given in my secondary school when trying to put somone down. I have grown up since then and would not ever try to support a sectarian divide. If this thread does then I think it should be binned as well. I did not also get arrested but only because the bouncer in the pub I was in stuck up for me and said i was not the aggresive one. I'm not going to stand there and be abused by some [Poor language removed] non stop untill I have to leave. I was not trying to stand up for my religion i was standing up for myself. If i'm not allowed stand up to idiots like him then I don't wanna live in Ireland anymore. It's all good you sitting there on your high horse when you were not even there so keep your comments about me to yourself.
