Is there Protestant or Catholic clubs in Liverpool

That is a fascinating read Stu. I recall those moves from inner to outer city, we moved from bombed out Rock Ferry to the then green fields of Woodchurch on the Wirral, all of those fields are now under concrete. The first thing the Catholics did on Woodchurch was to set up a mass in Landican cemetary, then built a school using the school hall as a church and that was quickly followed by the modern eyesore church that is there today. People did get moved 'ethnicaly' but even so it still broke community spirits. Scotty is a sad sight these days compared those of days gone by but socially the people are far better off.

I often wonder what nastiness went on behind the scenes in those days of the street corner boozer and back to back houses

without understanding or following a concept of god, how can one consider oneself an atheist?

Quite simply one should consider atheism as a superior belief system if it can be demonstrated that the arguments for the existence of god are poor, misconceived or confused. Do a search on the three most popular on the web:

1. The design argument
2. The cosmological argument
3. The ontological argument

They're terrible

I could go on all day about this but we're on the Everton board, not the ale house board, so I'll shut up now. But I'm willing to debate this further if you require. :P

quite astonishingly hilarious.

how does one decide or rather, on what does one judge to make such an evaluation?

The evidence, or lack of it, alternative possibilities and logic. Human beings have a great propensity for engaging in thought-provoking topics and producing decisions based on reasons other than faith or wishful thinking.

where does the conscience come from? the inner monologue that are your thoughts, consider, do french people think in the french language?

(this is no slight on the french, before anyone gets upset, i couldnt use the term foreign because 'thinking in foreign' wouldnt make sense - so i used the french as an example, it could easily have been spanish etc)

where does the conscience come from?

See my post on morality in the 1977 thread.
No I don't. However I believe that generally what is good for me is good for most people, so morality is built on a system of mutual benefit but when society breaks down and you don't really know who your neighbour is anymore and you don't identify with anyone but yourself or at least a very exclusive closed group then you have a crisis of morality.

Conscience is merely your subconscious or unconscious self communicating this stuff with you. There isn't really anything to do with the mind that can't be scientifically explained nowadays.

i'll indulge you, although i dont agree, for the sake of it at the moment lets forget that for a moment.

"Conscience is merely your subconscious or unconscious self"

so, where does subconscious or unconscious come from then?

do you have any links to literature scientifically explaining the mind, specific to conscience and inner monologue?

where does the conscience come from?

In Darwinian terms, conscience is most likely an adaptation. An individual would gain a biological advantage if other members of the group also began to develop an emphatic streak. Individuals like this begin to band together to protect themselves from the non-feeling morons. The group's genes are propagated as more and more people with the ability to have fellow-feeling find each other and mate. Genes are passed down, and socialization also begins to come into play. Hey presto, we have a society that possess conscience, or the ability to know 'right' from 'wrong'. It's basic Darwin, and pretty much accepted even by many modern theists (they differ in that they say god created the Big Bang knowing that life would adapt the way it did).

Literally the back of your mind.
I have no links handy but I studied this stuff in Uni. (Philosophy of mind, cognitive science etc.) I'll look some stuff up if you like.

Plus what Neb said above is pretty much spot on.

im concerned about this

"if other members of the group also began to develop an emphatic streak."

what does that mean?

and then...

"from the non-feeling morons."

im not sure we are tackling the same subject now, i havnt mentioned feeling as yet.

im doing my best to point out a few things as nicely as possible, the emboldened text is surely you having a laugh, isnt it?

Suits, you're not actually saying anything or proposing any type of theory. I've just given you one widely accepted view from the Darwin school. It's accepted even by theists, albeit with a supernatural first cause. You can argue against this view, but to do so requires more than just a few words which make sense only to you. :P
