Ivan Toney

Sounds very bad when you learn he was betting on his own team to lose but he hasn’t done that much wrong in my opinion unless I’m reading it wrong…..

the bets involving his own team, when he was in the squad/team he bet on his own side to win and in some cases backed himself to score .
The bets he placed on his team to lose are where he wasn’t in the squad/ team.

So any bet placed when he was actively involved meant his team had to win or he had to score.

I’d take him here all day.
Hope he bet on us to win at goodison

Im genuinely surprised it isn't a life ban. You can't bet on your own team. Even if Toney didn't play in them, who's to say he didn't have a word with someone in the squad?
I always thought betting on your own team is ok. Betting against them would be worse

Sorry mate but regardless of the situation and I don't know the facts, if he is an addict and just because he's still betting you think that means he's not making an effort without you knowing anything about him, that's a harsh line to take.
Ok I can handle being harsh. There are gambling addicts that don't have his money that don't have the luxury to keep on gambling. My brother lost his missus house, it wasn't even his to lose. It's a horrible thing.

To continue to gamble an make the distinction he's not betting on football, like it's some achievement doesn't really impress upon me much. But that's my personal view. Harsh as it may be.

It's cool. We all have our own views. I'm not for one second saying mine is right. I'm also not defending him. I don't know anything about him or the facts. Addiction is a big thing in my family so I guess I was being defensive. It's a complex issue where often there comes a point you give up. Sorry about your experience and I didn't mean to preach X

The whole thing is an absolute farce.

played in both matches against us and didn’t do much, but he’s scored 20 goals this season, affecting games, results and positions at the top and bottom of the table - hatrick against Leeds; brace against city - how can they ban him when there are still games to play? I would have thought that would be something the affected club’s lawyers would be prepping action against!

I have known football was knackered and well gone for a number of years but this episode has confirmed it - zero integrity in the competiton following this farce.

Its amazing it took so long and the ban happens to start right at the end of the season.

One happened in 1964 and it was a betting ring/scandal that enforced change of the actual rules regarding betting and insider influence. It was harsh, but also it was about 60 years ago like lol also about 10 players were jailed and never played in England again; Kay went on to more crime as well.

The other was 1 player having a betting problem with no (public) proof of what and how exactly the betting occurred. If he was sitting at home with a betting app on his phone - how do you even compare?

Andros Townsend was also banned for a bit for betting. Shock and horror when he wasn't in jail or hanged and quartered.

It is a joke of a sentence for Toney here but only because the FA waited until the season was over and Brentford were safe for literally no reason. Should've investigated and banned him ASAP to make a statement.
What crimes did Kay commit later?

Really surprised he only got 8 months now.

This is such a massive let of...really only half a season.

Betting against his own team and in games where he wasnt playing gives him inside information.

Also his former clubs games as well...basically any game in which he has inside knowledge.

Should have been 12months or 8months worth of actual games.

It also should've been ASAP, not "when the season is over" lol

The FA strikes with lack of logic once again

You weren't. Addiction is awful, I'm cynical about Toneys apparent addiction and don't buy it. Agree I don't know the full facts, though I wouldn't be taking him on his word either. It seems to be the done thing to say you suffer from 'x' now as reason for 'y' behaviour.

Either way, I think he's getting v reasonable punishment 👍

Like many I also have directly and indirectly been impacted by gambling addictions and its horrible.

However, he should of been banned for at least 3 seasons and may be then reduced to 2 seasons IF he could show he has been seeking help.

He knew the rules, or at least he should of, and still decided to gamble on his own team/sport etc regardless.

What will you think the next time you see him play? I know I will doubt anything he does on the pitch that doesn't appear to be right from now on.

Because he's still betting. I don't personally see that as making an effort. Or one of any real substance.
So unless someone who has an addiction successfully leaves that addiction, they're not trying.

Now you may be right but we don't really know the details, beyond his illegal activities

I would question why he felt the need to bet on football when there are so many legal options for him to sate his compulsion.

Then again, I've never had a gambling addiction.

Looking at the recent spate of suspensions and significant bans world snooker has doled out, this looks every penny a farce. And the sudden revelation of him being ill with gambling addiction smacks rather of the chris pincher situation re his sudden illness.

Shambles.
The football authorities have got a shambling addiction

See he’s got a story on Sky News today saying he thinks the timing of how his gambling issues was released was ‘spiteful’ and timed to affect his chances of playing for England.
Another lack of self awareness on a grand scale, not the slightest acknowledgement that, in fact, his chances of playing for England were on a diminishing trajectory the second he started breaking gambling rules.
Equally lacking awareness in digging out gambling as a pastime and it’s relationship with football when the man who pays his wages made his fortune in gambling. (Second bit I happen to agree with fwiw - but a) if I was that against it, I wouldn’t be employed by an offshoot of a gambling company, b) if it was paying my astronomical wages each week I’d defo be careful what I said about it!)
