Confirmed Signing Jake O'Brien

We’ve been saying this for years.

Oh I’m not suggesting anyone is stupid enough to buy them. Just that I don’t count them as options and they won’t get any minutes at all this season unless there’s an injury crisis. We definitely needed a 3rd CB that can play Premier League football to a competent standard.

They won't/hopefully won't.

But the poster said "we can't stockpile players" and "we can only buy if we sell"

And O'Brien goes against both of those things

is he better than Yoro though?
I don't rate Yoro much. He looks like a Q tip with a football kit on, he got bullied in Ligue 1, I can only imagine how bad it will be in the Prem. In three years time, he may become really good, but there is a lot to learn in between. However, he is very talented on the ball, and moves well, I get the appeal, especially for a team coached by ETH. It's just very early in his career.

Bonjour mon cher ami!

Welcome, welcome and thanks for all the insight into Jake!

While you're here, is there any chance we can tempt you into making a bid for Neal Maupay?

Bring a Frenchman home and all that... What do you say? ;)
We are talking about a former Saint-Étienne player, so it won't be possible, sorry. Anyway, with Lacazette, Mikautadze and Orban, there's no room for a CF.

Long term ofc we did, but neither of them walked into the team, Jarrod and DCL both took a few years to start to feature.

But unless you wanna turn into Zatara mate with a squad of prepubescents then you can't always sign the player 'before' they've actually shown they can handle that step up.

Take our business this season - Tim could very well turn into one of those players, but premier to premier there's a huge premium, if you think palace would sell him to us for 1m you're living in cuckoo land, they gave a massive fid punt and btw have a big sell on fee because they are in essence a sister club almost.

Ive not once said I want an entire squad of kids you buffoon.

Why hasn’t a top half team signed him ever?

Moyes offered £27mil and then £35mil when he was at West Ham. Burnley wanted more.

The 'issue' with Tarkowski is twofold -- one was a perceived weakness on the ball and the other was not playing in a high line (im guessing).

Hello, I am a Lyon supporter and I wanted to give a bit of insight about Jake O'Brien.

First of all, he is an amazing character, hard working, never giving up. He scored crucial goals when everything seemed going to pot. He scored the winner for the first win of the season (after 12 games!) or a goal in the Cup final for instance.

About him being slow, that's non sense. He is one of the fastest players in a league where so many are more sprinters than actual football players. I never saw him being outrun by anyone. However, as it was said, as a giant CB, he needs time to turn and switch directions. But after the first two strides, he's unbeatable.

However, and this is highly debated here, many supporters (like myself) think he is a real liability defensively as his positioning can be diabolical. On some occasions, you can see him spinning two or three times on himself before finding his man. Despite his height, he is no monster defending the box. He let two of the small players of the league score headers against us. In the Prem, especially in a low block, I reckon that it could be a disaster.

He is okayish on the ball, no issue there. But it definitely should be considered in a back 3, not in a back 4.

The lad came as a weird Textor signing and established himself as a starter. There's a lot to love about him, and I really wish him well. The jump to the Premier League is a tremendous challenge. I don't think he's ready now, but he improved so much in such a short time here that I'm actually curious to see how it will turn out. I would say it's a 50/50 situation.

So he is...

Slow to turn
Poor positioning
Cant defend

Sounds delightful ;)

What do you like about him aside from being a strong character?

Tarkoswki is not a fashionable player.
Supporters of the bigger clubs would be appalled by his signing.
He was not unanimously welcomed at Everton either but has been fantastic since he arrived and would have been
the best defender at Utd as well if they had the brains to sign him for free.

Big clubs make strange decisions.
Utd offered 43m for the most exciting defensive talent in the Premiership last season but then paid 60m for an 18 year old from France .

They have helped create the base price for Branthwaite who is already a full international.

He was a quality signing at the time we brought him in. 29, loads of experience and the leader and pure defender the top sides typically use next to a ball player.

Really happy with him joining.

I think although O'Brien has some rattled about Branthwaite he will be the long term Tarkowski replacement.

I don't rate Yoro much. He looks like a Q tip with a football kit on, he got bullied in Ligue 1, I can only imagine how bad it will be in the Prem. What about a replacement for Jake in a highly rated England international in big Mick Keane

Just take him mate! It doesn't matter, he can shine shoes, be a good water boy, clean the bogs...
