2022/23 James Garner

I really hope we see a full season of him playing in central midfield. He looks much more capable of keeping possession than any of our other midfielders, he’s the only central option who doesn’t seem to panic, and normally finds an option. We’re never going to be a team who dominates possession under Dyche, but Garner could certainly help us to improve. After another shocking season, Garner is 1 player who I’m looking forward to watching next season. Just buy a decent striker, so he’ll have someone to pass to!

United didn’t win that champions league without Owen. I actually think he is a very solid comparison. The thing about Garner is he has all the potential in the world to be great because he is athletic and well built. If he wanted to he could actually continue to play wing back as he has pace. He is the type of guy that could play most positions- just an athlete and a baller

It will be interesting to see where Dyche plays him. He seems to enjoy playing people out of position.

We all see him as a Centre mid but it makes you wonder how good he might be as a right back or right midfielder...

Have you posted in Braille here?
Copy/paste. I can see it in dark mode.

Imagine having a playmaker in attacking midfield, a winger and forward with pace making runs.

Lots of opportunities for attacking balls played

Think he's just a good and very aware player to be honest.

Not flashy in any way but does the right things and always looks for the ball and for a positive pass, happy with him so far, hope he develops further with us.
He certainly knows how to use the ball, he was very calm bringing the ball out of defence, looking around before parting with the ball, no diving in but showing the winger the touch line before taking the ball off him, excellent in a position he hadn’t played in before. I prefer him playing in centre midfield where he uses his brain to bring other players into the game and always ready for a return pass, he’s had a good football education at Man. Unt. and it shows, looks like a bargain for£10M or so. Look forward to seeing him make himself a regular centre midfielder next season.

I think it's his position.

IIRC Baines started out as a midfielder.

I think the key would be that Garner is very noticable in the sense that he's 'all action' while Onana is a typical Anchor wrongly used as a box to box player. Very different role for Belgium

Both Lampard and Dyche have admitted using Onana in a different role to "improve his all round game"...Garner was rarely used by Lampard and being shifted around by Dyche.

I'd hope that playing together in their correct roles next season we'd see alot more from both players. Also with an attacking player in the midfield with them it could open up the whole team to play.

I like Doucoure in terms of end product but a smart manager would bring in a ball player here so the midfield is complete.

Agreed. Doucoure will still see plenty of game time but he should really be a plan B off the bench when we need to mix things up. I’m not sure Dyche will see it the same way though as he doesn’t really set up to control games

Its no harm him having it in locker, Gareth Barry could play full back as well if my memory is right, Delph played full back to for City

We had Captain Pointy as well.

Defenders being able to step up into midfield in possession is all in vouge this second half of the season, City and Mordor have been doing it.

In an ideal set up you’d have 2 full backs who get forward and a left sided version of Garner who could drop over to the left when needed.

I can see Patterson benefitting massively from Garner being in the team, he just needs to stay fit.

Didnt Sean say something recently mate - think it was in reference to Onana - that young players should play in different positions as they are developing - im almost certain i read something a while back ok.

That certainly seems to be at least standard Everton practice over the years. Young centre backs, in particular, have to earn their spurs at fullback.
