Why do people compare him to other players?
and then even worse,
why do other people argue whether the comparison is fair?

Too much time on our hands….

Its no harm him having it in locker, Gareth Barry could play full back as well if my memory is right, Delph played full back to for City

We had Captain Pointy as well.

Defenders being able to step up into midfield in possession is all in vouge this second half of the season, City and Mordor have been doing it.
TBH mate I see the two FB berths as being crucial for us to get right...only a bit after the forward situation.

I want to see two new starting FBs in there next season.

I'll be interested to see how Dyche sees this. He used Patterson only after Coleman's injury and he could surely see how he was limited as a defender as well as Mykolenko's limitations as an attacking LB.

I'm convinced we'll see movement on this.

Even in the James Garner thread you're going on about Patterson, give it a rest.

In an ideal set up you’d have 2 full backs who get forward and a left sided version of Garner who could drop over to the left when needed.

I can see Patterson benefitting massively from Garner being in the team, he just needs to stay fit.
Levi Colwill
Didnt Sean say something recently mate - think it was in reference to Onana - that young players should play in different positions as they are developing - im almost certain i read something a while back ok.
Both he and Lampard said it as theyve been using Onana box to box when hes a midfield anchor for Belgium and always has been that type of DM.

They said it was to improve his all round game. Dyche also said something about "on the continent they assign players positions when theyre young and then they always play in that role. I want to give him a different role, more advanced to improve his all round game".

Id rather we played a clear DM in his natural position tbh.

Thats a fair point and why he brought in Steven Defour. Onana seems to be a highly intelligent chap so he should pick things up...but has to be as an anchor. Its like using Busquets box to box imo.

Garner on the other hand has that in his game. Not surprised at the stat you posted and in a season i think he'll be in the England squad.
Exactly, you are basically answering the point I made. ( although questioning it!! )

He is a more of a deeper lying playmaker, that has the ability to control the centre and piece together the way you move forward/attack a game, whilst also being a great cover.

When you have those abilities at your disposal, a good manager will look at you as the focal point of his gameplay.

I think the midfield should be setup in one of two ways...

1: Onana + Garner in a double pivot with a new attacking midfielder / playmaker signed to play ahead of them.

2: Onana as DM and Garner as right sided central midfielder with a left sided central midfielder needed.

I see him like an Owen Hargreaves, rather than a playmaker hes simply a very good all rounder.

Well how either of us see him in the team, doesn't really matter as neither of us have the option to make the decision.

But the fact everyone is finally coming round to us having a 'special talent' on our hands now, is a positive in itself.

Just hope dyche see's this and makes the most of it when building his team for next season.

I think whats clear mate, is that we need creativity and to add goals. We need to that on a limited budget. You can do that many ways, wide forwards, creative midfielders, wingers, strikers (a must) or attacking full backs.

It all comes down to priority and how the manager wants to set up, if we go with wing forwards we’ll need more attacking full backs, we might get away with one on the left, if Coleman and Patterson hold the right for another year. I’m not convinced Sean sees Patterson at this level yet - he went for Godfrey and Holgate before him, when Coleman got injured. I heard over here Coleman would Call it a day this year - not sure if he’s been talked around or had a change of heart.

Can see us going for a utility player maybe, Walker Peters, Johnson at WHU or James Justin.

If we can pick up a good young left wing back then I reckon McNeil will have the freedom to be hitting a good 10+ goals next season plus extra Assists coming from that side. Obviously need a Capable striker to be helping us out there tho...

Comparisons for young players aren’t meant to be like for like. I actually don’t even think Scholes is the right comparison but there is nothing wrong with using him as a blueprint.
To say he plays in the style of.... no problem. To say he has the ability of Scholes is crazy. I really hope he is proven right, because I remember watching Man U Everton at Old Trafford and I was mesmerised by Scholes. The constant head movement. Awareness of everything around him. 1-touch football. Head and shoulders above all other midfielders on the pitch that day.

Arsenal with Zinchenko who also did it at City. As did Joao Cancelo.

….Dyche actually mentioned how well “Patto” was doing before that final injury scuppered his season. I think that praise was genuine & he was liking what he saw. As somebody who thought he’d be terrific, I’ve been disappointed with Patterson this season (more from an attacking dimension) but I’ve seen enough to still think he could be very decent.

I’d be surprised if a RB is on the summer shopping list but we have to have better than Mykolenko on the left.
