….Dyche actually mentioned how well “Patto” was doing before that final injury scuppered his season. I think that praise was genuine & he was liking what he saw. As somebody who thought he’d be terrific, I’ve been disappointed with Patterson this season (more from an attacking dimension) but I’ve seen enough to still think he could be very decent.

I’d be surprised if a RB is on the summer shopping list but we have to have better than Mykolenko on the left.

I think going into the season with Patterson and Coleman is high risk. Coleman could be finished any moment and Patterson keeps picking up injuries.

Garner has shown he could play there so perhaps we bring in a midfielder (which we need) to develop and if there are RB issues Garner can move there short-term -- with the new young midfielder getting game time.

Left back id just take Nkounkou back if possible but if not then loan for Lewis Hall or Renan Lodi with options to buy.

I'd never imagine Garner showing up in a Paul Scharner/Phil Neville-like utility man role.

Anyway, he's shown enough to warrant an important role in the first XI next season. Still has some improvement to do but despite being a bit of a doubt to begin with he's won me over.

Onwards and upwards, hope he puts in a good effort in preseason.

Proud to be on team 'never doubted'. Talented player that United did not want to sell for a reason, but he had no pathway to minutes there, so he forced a move. We were fortunate enough to be the beneficiary of the heist.

Seems like a more talented Gareth Barry to me. Killer set pieces, glue guy. Makes everyone around him better.

Feel free to vault this one if I'm wrong. I won't own bad injury luck, but if he just plain fails I'll own it.

Gaz Baz is rated like really, really high in my book so anywhere near that and I'll be made up

Let's face it, if he had a choice between Patterson and an ageing Coleman we know full well who he'd choose.

On Garner: I watched the full game back from Sunday, and although we set up as 3 at the back and using wing backs we fell into a back 5 in that game (going to a four when one of the CBs roamed forward...which happened a lot) and conceded a lot of possession (68% to B'mouth). Garner never put a foot wrong as a FB in that game. Positionally (a massive bug bear with me for any FB) he was flawless. He was where he needed to be when we didn't have possession all day long. He was aggressive but controlled in the tackle and neutralised any danger by showing their winger the line to get down. And he was also a threat going forward and linking play, and could have scored with that first half effort from the edge of the box.

In short: Garner was a revelation at FB. He was better than Coleman there.

I know what I'd be doing if I were Dyche: setting up pre-season games and preparing him for a FB role next season. In any case, Dyche will go 442 next season and the competition for places in midfield will be won by Doucoure and Gueye.

If Coleman retires, fair enough keep Patterson on as a back up. But if Coleman comes back for another season...and I suspect he will...then sell or loan Patterson out.

Patterson was 20 when he joined Everton for his first season in the EPL.
He only started to get game time this season. Broken game time.

Do we not believe in coaches? Issues some have with him, can they not be taught?

He has shown more than enough that he can be the current, let alone the future. Grief.

He's shown bits and pieces but never sustained a performance apart from that solitary derby display.

Garner was literally error-free in a position he's not familiar with and in one of the 4 most nerve shredding game in our modern history as a club.

As said: a revelation at RB.

I can't really see the comparison with Barry myself, seems a bit different to me. Also Barry had a brilliant career winning titles, might be a bit of a stretch to say he's more talented already 🤣

Fair. Point being, I think he is the sort of player that has at least some of those intangibles, in the sense that he improves the rest of the squad. He also has a legit talent over dead balls.

Calling me out for perhaps intimating that he's already there on the work rate and dressing room thing is 100% legit.

He's a midfielder Garner and he should be played there he's the best passer by a mile and also does the dirty work. Patterson is our RB going forward, regardless of what the angry lemon says.

That's settling for a player who cant even shift a 35 year old Coleman form his position.

One thing at least: I know that if Coleman retires we're not necessarily stuck with Patterson continuing to learn his treade at the age of 22 or whatever. We can turn to Garner to fill that role more than adequately.
