Every single player in the world is potentially a good player.

As much as I would like to join in the Big Oil pile on, the abuse hes got over the last few pages is a bit rum.

I get it, we want the lad to succeed, I want the lad to succeed, I just dont think hes done anything to warrant the Gareth Barry comparisons that ive noticed over the last few pages.

Very early days for the lad and I said a few pages ago, hes not a bad player and hes very young and has lot of improving to do, im just not sure hes done anything other than float around midfield looking tidy.

I guess thats a decent benchmark, for now.
But comparing him to technically lackluster players like Godfrey is a provocative stance..who knows where he'll end up but in the future but oil is nihilistic in his takes doesn't excuse personal attacks though I concur

You really think he is on par with Godfrey and mykolenko? Jesus I was going to say watch more football but you've seemed to reach a ceiling on learning distinctions in quality. Garner is a fundamentals player who links things together if you can't see that I despair, he is vastly superior technically even if he doesn't become top shelf he is on another level then other younger players here . You're like the alexi Lolas of this forum just can't fathom your commentary sometimes-solely footy discussion no attack on you as a person
I think his current status among Evertonians resembles the way those two were talked about early on as well. I mean go back and read the Godfrey threads if you need reminding.

Again the whole linking things stuff just feels to me like what people want him to be less than what he's actually doing. I'd love for him to be that type of player too! But I don't think he is showing it.

My actual response last night, which maybe of been a bit over the top.
Didn't really come from anything to do with the actual post I replied too.

It was more Instantaneous, as everything I seem to read from him seems like he's just stirring a barrell of negativity hoping someone bites.

I feel the only real time he seems to come alive and post on here is after a defeat or when we're most down as a fanbase.
Not when we've just had a great game and got our spirits up a bit.

So it was more a built up reaction ( that possibly shouldn't have come out the way it did )

Should have I responded, probably not!!

Am I wrong in my assessment ?

Godfrey had a decent first season to be fair, fell off a cliff since mind you. A player that grafts and tackles hard always sits well with us but now he should be right down the pecking order.

garner had a really good season in the championship so people are rightly hopeful he can then step up and in his brief time on the pitch at least shows a bit of composure on the ball. None of the others can pass to save their lives.

Not that there's any reason to relitigate this but Godfrey really wasn't any good his first season. Which is what makes this comparison so apt for me. As I've said I'm really hoping the traits he has develop into a real player. However right now things like composure are just traits.

This.

Godfrey, let's be honest, just looked like he was running fast, and looked like he was really trying hard in his first year. Good traits to have, and was something to build on.

He's never really ever looked like an actual footballer. Just kind of an athlete. Positional awareness was always a mess with him.

As for Garner, he looks tidy in possession and appears to have some semblance of a football IQ. But it's not like he's setting the world on fire. He merely looks like a semi-competent player, which next to Doucoure, he looks like peak Xavi. But yeah, looks like there's a player in there, hopefully he continues to get better.

Garner's done well in recent weeks, but it's by the standards of a team that is 17th in the league. We're just so starved of decent players we elevate anyone who can find a pass in midfield to being potential superstar.

He has done well. He's shown promise and probably is one of the more talented players in our squad. It's not elevating him to a superstar, but it's recognizing when someone has the potential to be more than the general dross/end of life around him. He's the type of signing we should be making and continue to make. The next few years aren't going to be fun, but we have to get back to a level of shrewd purchases. Garner represents that in my opinion.

He might represent that right now, but let's be realistic. He's started less than 10 games so there's no guarantees about how we'll all feel in a year's time. Schneiderlin, Walcott and Davies looked good to begin with.
