2023/24 James Garner

Hoofball creates more chances than Garner.
Rarely tries a decisive pass.
For all of Onana's fault, he tries to play forward, to see runs and make passes.
Garner at the moment does not.
Jarrad Bowen and JWP create more and they play with dross the level of our players.

The best thing he brought to the team when he come in was passing forward. To have a centre midfielder who actually looked to progress the ball.

I think he's doing it less at the moment - coinciding IMO with a fall in form.

The thing is though, the lack of pace in wide areas kills us. If we had attacking full backs, or pace on the wings he'd have more opportunity to pass forward.

We'd miss him if he wasn't there.
Set pieces are important in modern football, and it's good that we score from them, but we need to step up with goals from open play. Not a big fan of stats and xgoals, but finishing our chances is a bigger problem than creating them. We average 14 shots a game, around 7 on average in the penalty spot area, despite having low passing accuracy and possession. No coincidence that there are players of us in the top 10 chances created, big chances created and big missed chances per 90 minutes, as well as a team we are 5th. That's very worrying for a team that doesn't constantly try to attack. We need faster wingers who can take a 1vs 1 and have some good decision-making inside the box. I agree with full backs, especially Mykolenko should be allowed to attack more, he would get a few scorers a season. That helped a lot in the last 15th on Monday, as we suddenly had more options for the header extensions of DCL.
