2024/25 James Garner

But it's no use doing that when Garner is all hands to the pumps screening the defence or running back toward his own goal.

If you play Garner you tell him his primary duty is to receive the ball and play it forward.
That's how Garner plays, he's all action.

You won't get him to sit, it's not in him.

In other games he will get more time on the ball, but yesterday was frantic with the way Bournemouth pressed.

Not sure where this idea he's some sensational deep-lying playmaker ever came from.

He's got a good pass on him, no doubt about it. But his big strengths are actually the fact he gets around the pitch and has the ability to press and hassle.

We saw him get more joy in the 2nd half once Alcaraz came on because he pressed 10 yards higher.

He should be played higher up the pitch. As I said earlier: his heat map should be mostly in the centre circle.

And tbh, the lad is an injury liability. Having him charge round the pitch maximises that.

He and McNeil are the only players that can pick a pass out and have to be used properly.

Not to dwell on this one too much as it ultimately made v little difference to the result, but thought Garner was generally really poor today.

Lost count of the number of misplaced passes or poor decisions with the ball.

We were crying out for a bit of quality from midfield and he had his worst game in a blue shirt IMO

That being said, I'm generally a fan of his, so I wouldn't make this a bigger thing than just to point this out on this one occasion and, as I said at the start, fortunately it had no bearing on the result in the end

Agree neither Garner or Gana had their best games last night but the three they were up against (plus Salah ofc) are a big reason that lot are top of the league. Against most teams Garner will more than hold his own.
