2024/25 James Garner

Has to earn his place in the starting line-up. With everyone fit our best three in the middle will be Mangala and Gueye with Tim ahead in the 10/second striker position. Garner will need to come off the bench and show that he can play one of those three positions better than the incumbent. My instinct tells me that he won't, and will remain a bit part player for the rest of the season

With everyone fit he is one of our best 3, why would it be Tim there? I like the lad but he should be eased in and is definitely not a guaranteed starter.

Can see a decent amount of competition for the 3 spots but we're at a point where Gueye is also not a guarantee - we can't expect to see him pulling back the years every week, he's been hugely inconsistent for about 2 years now and I honestly expect a stinker in the next few from him, as it has been for a while (sadly).

Current setup is probably a trio of Garner, Gueye and Mangala, with maybe Garner in the slightly advanced role. I'd say we should play a creative player at #10 who can carry the ball though, so a duo of either of those 3 (4 with Tim) and Ndiaye ahead of them in the 10 is probably more positive-thinking. Or McNeil in the 10 if Ndiaye isn't available, etc.

End of the day, I'm just somewhat happy we have some options in a position  Hope Moyes actually uses them and stops playing Doucoure altogether though.

I probably prefer Tim in the higher up position (more robust and dynamic) and Garner further back (better distribution from deep). However I prefer Mangala over JG. So that's my reasoning, but just my opinion.

Maybe some recency bias there and have completely forgotten what JG looks like. Maybe under Moyes he'll be great. But I think has to show it

Don't think he can do what Gueye does, but then I'm not sure anyone can? Should probably be looking for a ball winner in the summer transfer window

This was my feeling at the start of the season, but it shows we're still thin on the ground for strength in depth as it's only taken a couple of long term injuries for us to be back to square 1.

Our subs against Spurs were all defensive (Keane, Patterson and Young the players to come on)... it'll be nice to have the option to change things up using midfielders/forwards again.

Would be a huge shame. Doucoure is ripe for replacement.

Ideally both of them get moved out the starting XI for Garner and Tim, with Gana as the holding midfielder

Long term want a Gana replacement but he's been our best midfielder this season, as much as I like Mangala

Possibly could do Garner or Mangala as dm/6, with the other one and Tim as cms/8s, but hard to drop Gana atm

Don’t know if he’ll be great but I think Moyes will definitely use him more effectively. As he’s trying to make us more threatening in attack, all of the midfield players are going to be operating under different instructions from Dyche’s ‘defend at all costs’.

Hopefully that brings out the very best from players like Garner. As long as he stays fit 😉

Dyche didn't play through the midfield - he played over it!

Aside from a few sideways passes to the full backs and centre halves, most of the midfield work was doggies off the ball and second balls from DCL flick-ons.

If we're going to start playing through the lines and working triangles in the wide areas, players like Garner could look very different to what we are used to
