James McCarthy - I'm not impressed

His form has "dipped".

He has "yet to live up to last season's great form".

The season has barely started and by common consent the whole team has had a subdued opening few weeks.

Come back when he has had ten or eleven consecutive bad games behind him.

Then happen you can justifiably start talking about his form having "dipped".

This thread and comments like yours are straight from the Aiden McGeady Unappreciation Society manual.

Why are some folk on here always looking for a whipping boy.
Calm down mate. All that's being said is the lad hasn't been in good form early season, that's it, and it's a fact.

No-one's wanting him binned or giving him pelters, just saying it how it is.

OK he is playing well.

There have been threads on other players form also so why is McCarthy immune. Its blatantly obvious he is not playing to form so why get tetchy.

I think both Barry and McCarthy are struggling without Barkley in front of them. Too much is coming through the middle whilst they're also tasked with getting across and plugging gaps for attacking FBs.

No one wants him binned because they all know we have no one better.

Very few teams do.

The lid deserves better than to have Ossie style threads started on the back of a few less than sterling performances.

But that's the GOT way, innit ;)

Because it's easier than engaging their brain cells to actually think about the bigger picture and recognise the value of a player's contribution to the side.

If the team as a whole start to pick up their performances but McCarthy doesn't then fair enough however singling him out now is extremely blinkered to say the least.

A part of the way he plays in the midfield, when combined with a good wing and attacking midfield is fantastic and he just needs to be the engine in the middle. the problem he will be having is we havent played the same 45 minute halves as we did last season and as a result we can get stuck into midfield battles or worse still (chelsea) bypass the central midfield altogether. Point is stick Ross infront of him rather than Naismith and you will soon see the last season McCarthy. He is just being stranded as we are only really playing 2 in the middle rather than 3 with leon / ross.

Didn't have his best game against West Brom but we're only 4 games in. When you say you're not impressed, do you mean this season or overall? Because if you mean overall then I am suprised. He was excellent last season, easily one of our best players.

He's never going to be a stand out player to people who are expecting a skilful centre midfielder with loads of creativity. He's not a Cesc Fabregas and never will be. But he is excellent at what he does and that's getting stuck in, covering loads of ground and protecting the defence. He also drives forward well with pace, but he isn't going to be able to cap it off with a goal or a clever through ball. We've got Barkley who can do that (take his Newcastle goal for example), and Mirallas.

I'm hoping he has a good game in the derby as he's the perfect player to get stuck in to that lot.

For me he is too similar to Barry and he doesn't drive forward enough, he is great at breaking the play up but he is not as creative as Barry and certainly not Gibson. I remember reading a post somewhere that had taken his average stats from a few games and compared them to Gibsons from matching fixtures - his forward passes were 49% compared to Gibson's at 70%.

I think it's too much playing with two defensive midfielders in front of the defence, especially since neither of them has an ounce of creativity. Don't get me wrong I love him and Barry but together it's just too much and too defensive.

He's not playing brilliantly but he is also suffering from having less footballers in front of him. The two wingers weren't retaining the ball enough, Naismith didn't hold up very well and the fullbacks couldn't bomb on as much as a result. We looked a much better footballing side when Osman came on and we'd look better I will wager if we put Pienaar on one wing and took McGeady out for a game or two.
