James McCarthy - I'm not impressed

Average in the first two games and then terrible against Chelsea and also WBA, I was impressed with literally every other player (Naismith had a quiet game but we all know how well he's been playing otherwise).

McCarthy can't even play well when we play well, what's up with that?

Does anyone else agree or am I on my wn with this??

Bit kneejerk mate.

He's been pretty average overall and not at the peak of his form but no player is 100% all the time. We've seen what he can do, and I'm confident he'll come good again.

This is exactly what I saw from him at Wigan - passive, afraid to take command. Last season he blew me away out of the blue, but I hope this isn't a revert to type situation.
fkn L Tubes, there's harsh and then there's Tubey Harsh

you do know your negativity can permeate osmotically through the fanbase don't ya ?

I think it's too much playing with two defensive midfielders in front of the defence, especially since neither of them has an ounce of creativity. Don't get me wrong I love him and Barry but together it's just too much and too defensive.

That's not right, Barry has an eye for a pass, got a number of assists last season and has 1 already this

I've not been too impressed with him but he's allowed some time out of form as he was consistent throughout all of last season.

On saying that the thread raises a good point as we have options in midfield to replace him until he does play into form. We are conceding the midfield too easy so it needs addressing.

We have a solid run of games now so I expect it to kick start a few players into contention for being first choice in all areas of the team. Should be interesting to watch anyway. Gibson and Besic will get chances over the next three weeks so it's up to them.

Nice to have some decent options for a change.

I wasn't being negative? I said he was outstanding last season but what I'm seeing now is what I saw at Wigan - I'm not saying he's going to be like that permanently, I'm just saying it's not the first time I've saw it, so it's a bit of a cause for concern given his past.

just get off his back, I've told ya, once he breaks his boots in he'll be right

Alright, I agree with you and I worded it wrong, but in their defensive positions it is too much I think. We don't need two players sat in front of the defence. I guess while we are playing with one striker it's ok though, and we seem to be scoring plenty of goals. Maybe having two defensive midfielders invites too much pressure though and our defence isn't good enough to cope with it and prevent goals? Just an idea.

Doesn't half feel like you are using a poor run of form to justify your stance on McCarthy before we bought him.

He's not hit top form yet, but has anyone. Only Coleman and Mirallas have any kind of consistency so far. The rotations will happen thick and fast with all these fixtures coming up so he'll be rested for some of them.

Looking forward to seeing Besic play a full game. We do have some good cover in CM this year and all 4 will play their part I'd imagine.

That's a different discussion.

The 2 holding players (are supposed to) cover the full back positions when they bomb on. If you move back to 1, then you run the risk of being exposed down the flanks. He'd have to change his entire preferred system and I can't see him doing that.

Calm down mate. All that's being said is the lad hasn't been in good form early season, that's it, and it's a fact.

No-one's wanting him binned or giving him pelters, just saying it how it is.
OK he is playing well.

There have been threads on other players form also so why is McCarthy immune. Its blatantly obvious he is not playing to form so why get tetchy.

The reaction is because he was possibly our best player last season, many would have selected him anyway, he has had 4 games this season where has played average to poor to bad. 4 games only.

A comment in the already open McCarthy thread stating he was playing crap and hopefully he comes back to form would be reasonable, but you don´t think starting a new thread with this heading and that opening post is something a bit different and knee-jerky? I think people react the way they do to stuff like this because a lot of people don´t want the forum full of certain types of threads and posts that are getting all too common.

As a rule no player is immune to criticism. Can we apply a rule to posters saying no fuming, over-analysing and freaking out until we get at least ten games in? (I personally wouldn´t even start worrying if he did continue his poor form for that long. it happens)

I don't have to justify it, it's what it was. If I was desperate to justify it, I'd have been illogically criticising him last season throughout.

I'm just saying what I'm seeing, nothing more, nothing less. The lad was terrifyingly good last season, but he's been poor this season thus far - all I'm saying is that I've seen it before, which is true. I've also seen him be incredible; also true.
