LOL

2 players and 20m, yeah, that sounds like Spurs.

That is almost certainly pure fiction but if it were true I'd be tempted, Lennon is nowhere near as bad as some people think and Kaboul would be an upgrade on Jagileka. 20m also buys us a top player, a proper no.10 so Barkley could drop deep to take McCarthy's position

It's not McCarthy's speed (or any players) it's the tempo and rhythm of his passing, it give a sense of urgency without being too quick that players start being inaccurate. That's why he's so important, it's not even his tackling/covering but that helps.
That for me is the biggest difference from last seasons success. The passing this season has looked laboured in comparison.

Lennon has had his fair share of hamstring injuries so would fit in with the medical team

Buuuuut Barkley would be more of a replacement for Barry as opposed to McCarthy. Not the same player at all.

When is he back ? I would love to see him and Besic just few games togheter . Think it will set free fullbacks and defense will be more secure, even front players could stay up more for counter. And high-up pressure would be better.

I felt last year that there were periods early in games where it was ineffective but then at some point usually after about 25 mins in each half we would click, hit a purple patch where the pace and rhythm was spot on. We would go through the oppo's lines and often score. That hitting it just right timing would determine the outcome of the game. We still struggled against teams that parked the bus.
This year we just do not seem to progress regularly from the phase where we are trying to find the rhythm to that really effective purple patch where the passing is really slick, pacey and, most importantly going through the oppo a bit rather than playing in front of them which we have been doing so much.
I think it is a bit the oppo reducing the space between their lines for us to play through and a bit us not delivering the passing and movement at pace which hurts the oppo.

Not a scrap of creativity between them. Would be great for the big away games just to lock everything down but how are those two going to unlock a WBA at home? (Especially when the wide players are Naismith and Barkley). I agree though that its a better option than putting Barry any where in the team.

I'd really like to see Besic holding by himself then Bakley and McCarthy ahead of him in a three. Least we'd have powerful box to box runners from deep. Two holding mids holding hands with the centrebacks and Barkley upfront with Lukaku is just not working. I want to see a return to the 4141 of 04/05. 4231 is killing us at the moment.

Well initially it worked wonders for us because they dropped in at right/left back to allow Baines and Coleman to bomb on.

It hasn't been happening This season.

When McCarthy comes back it could be Barkley that will lose out. Besic and Barry could act as defensive midfielders allowing McCarthy to push forward running at defences with the ball , a role I think that could well suit him.
The other option would be play Barry, McCarthy and Besic. Barry could act as cover for Baines, McCarthy acts as cover for Coleman and then give our two full back licence to attack down the wings as we did last year, now that would shake things up a lot.

I highly highly doubt Martinez will play McCarthy further forward.

I'm not even sure it's a good idea.

Can agree with playing all 3 together but not with McCarthy then having the more forward role. Not neccesary anyway. With this solid middle 3 in there protecting the back line we'd still have places for 2 more advanced, more attacking midfielders eg Barkley and Mirallas, with either Lukaku or Kone up top.

We can barely score goals and we're going from 2 holding mids to three holding mids? Any chance of someone who can pass the ball forward playing in midfield at any point?
