You're missing the point. There'd be two other MFs to do the more forward, creative work and to support the striker.

And how do we get the ball to them? That's the problem at the moment. Nothing wrong with the forward players but they're getting the ball in the wrong areas facing away from goal. McCarthy isn't going to rectify that we need a Gibson or Osman type to get their head up and play incisive through balls or a Barkley type to carry from deep.

McCarthy and Barkley were brilliant in the Goodison derby last year once Barry went to left back. Barkley and Besic were good against QPR as well. Gibson and McCarthy were very good in a cameo against Lille where we could have scored for fun.

The balance has to be right. One holding, one peogressive. 2 holding and a pensioner is not the right balance.

What I'm talking about here is playing in a 4-3-2-1 formation. There'd be no problem getting the ball further forward from the back. Any one of the 3 could be taking the ball off our CBs and progressively then they would work together to take the ball up the pitch, with the other 2, more advanced, MFs taking it from there. At the moment both of our defensive MFs are being pressed in our own last third and we struggle to make any progress.
 

This F... er would want to get his act together and get back in the middle of the park. Pass ..tackle....get up ...tackle... run...
get up run......tackle... pass....
