James McCarthy

I don't know what everyone else is seeing in Besic that I'm not... I'm seeing some neat touches, but overall a young developing pro who makes more poor choices in the possession than I'd like to see from a player in his role, slowing the game down and taking unnecessary risks.

I'd understand the hype over what he's doing on the pitch if he was an attacking midfield player, but I honestly think people are glossing over his glaring lack of basics because he steps away from a few players once in a while.

Give him time to come good and stop overhyping him is my advice, he's nowhere near settled into this league. As it is, I'd have McCarthy on the bench at first and then coming in to replace Besic, as it was this time 12 months ago that that midfield pair was our strongest asset.

You'd swear footballers aged 30 and up should be given the Logan's Run treatment if you went on this forums advice. It isn't FM.

With the greatest respect, if you cant see the talent Besic has, football really isnt for you.

He controlled the WBA game from minute 1 until he was taken off.

I think he's incredibly talented, but not ready to be relied on week in week out right now.

Was delighted when he signed and he's been very encouraging, but that combo of Barry/McCarthy was the best centre mid partnership I've seen at Everton since the 80s and I'm not prepared to write that off after a disrupted few months.

I think Besic is a very able deputy, but I think it'd indicate a permanent step back if we're relying on a temperamental kid in the heart of our midfield for success. He's got some way to go before he's a must-start central midfielder at this level.

The problem for me is that I regard McCarthy and Barry to be probably the last players Roberto would substitute when they are healthy, even when Barry has been visibly weaker compared to his debut season. I'd like to think that Besic will get his fair share of games too as he has also proven (to me at least) that he can do a much more reliable job if he gets a run of games and he's everything but short of confidence. Barry has been so indifferent this year that I often don't even realise he's on the pitch.

Would agree with all of that, unfortunately Besic is now in the position that the only way he can learn is by playing many more games and making mistakes (which he's done as much as anyone so far). Besic has got to improve his decision making and range of passing to take over from Barry but there will come a point very soon when covering for an injury/suspension to Barry or McCarthy isn't going to be enough, he'll then job share until he offers more than a deteriorating Barry and eventually next season take over his spot permanently. It's just a question of patience all round.

"If you don't agree with my opinion then watch another sport"

Bit childish.

Plus - I'm pretty sure @Tubey said nothing of the sort?

And controlled the game against WBA? what aspects of the game needed our control from a defensive midfield perspective? He was neat and tidy don't get me wrong but until he starts to show a little initiative in the final third when we are playing games against opponents sitting deep in their own half then he will always be the first one hooked.

I like Besic but he is devoid of ideas sometimes and we've seen him shirk responsibility by just looking to Barkley to bail the team out.

He will be a superb talent, as Tubey has said, but with a fully fit squad he isn't yet ready or good enough in our first 11.

Barry isn't good enough either!

So what do you do? Play 10 men?

haha, ey fair point mate.

I think Barry has had a bit of a raw deal. Yes he's had a loss of form but so has everyone else.

I can see though why anyone would want him benched, he has been poor of late, however in the last 3 or 4 games he's started to look more like the Barry of last year, do you agree?

@MoutsGoat @Tubey had some good points written down earlier.

I would deffo start Barry and McCarthy against Palace for two main reasons: let Macca have games under his belly and Barry will eventually miss two games after the next yellow ( if not this Saturday than it will happen against the RS for sure) till then play him. And what I've seen from the last 3-4 matches I think Barry looked pretty bad because they weren't used to each other with Besic. But lately this discomfort disappeared and they worked well together and Barry looked more lively for me. I assume this pairing would take the same amount of time (5-6 matches) for M&M to work out so it's a little risky to probe it when the team needs solid grounds and points.

Besic is staying on the ground in all of his interviews: he said he was surprised he could play so much, he knows exactly where he started this season, in what he has to develop and I think everyone sees how much he developed from that Swansea match in just 10-15 games played. It won't even sratch his confidence if he'll sit 2-3 games on the bench. Being a DM in modern football requires the most responsibility and regarding he's playing it just for 7 month it's quite impressive so far but a long way to go from here. You know I love his play from the first touch he made at Ferencváros I was amazed but he needs another 1/2 year to be that DM who can handle things perfectly.

the fear, frustration and even the booing of that sub comes from martinez's absolute refusal to drop, sub or even rotate barry, if it looke like he was willing to do any of these things and that besic would be eased in to replace barry, then people would be less vocal and more supportive of the situation, as it stands the manager is looking far too stuck in his ways both with selections and tactics

Besic was MOTM in the WBA game and there's no way he should lose his place at Palace.

Very talented footballer, but my heart's in my mouth every time he lunges in for a challenge.

If McCarthy is fit enought to start, I'd drop Barry.

Barry is so one paced that if his brain isn't in gear its like playing with ten men. At least with Mccarthy and Besic, they will break up opposition passing and force mistakes.
