...McCarthy's stock has risen since he came to us which is good. It's probably when our players aren't linked with a move away that we need to be concerned.

Problem is Barry is playing McCarthy's role - May be he will go about his contract was he not asked last year and put us off?Remember how we all laughed when Whelan said he was a 20 mil player

Two goals in two season is not a box to box midfield player, I am sure he could do what Barry does and have the energy to get box to box why do we need two defensive mid-fielders as he spends his time helping out the very slow Barry!Totally disagree. McCarthy is at his best as a box-to-box player. His energy and athleticism would be completely wasted in the "Barry role" as he wouldn't be able to charge around winning the ball back, he would have to be disciplined. I think the end of this season saw how effective he can be when the shackles come off to an extent.
On top of that, McCarthy doesn't have the class on the ball that Barry does and our "play out from the back" style would suffer as a result.

I like him , but I feel Barry is cramping his style as last year unfortunately for us it was one season too many for Barry, maybe Besic with quicker movement may a better option that Barry letting McCarthy do his work in the opposition box?
