James McCarthy has NOT told Everton he wants to leave the club this summer.

Reports have suggested the Republic of Ireland midfielder has informed the Blues of his desire to quit the club during the forthcoming transfer window.

However, it is understood the Goodison side have not received such a message from the 24-year-old.

McCarthy and his representatives are seeking talks with the Everton hierarchy over the player’s current contract.

The midfielder, who signed from Wigan Athletic for £13million in September 2013, has emerged as key figure for the Blues under Roberto Martinez.

Several clubs, including Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, have been linked to McCarthy, with speculation having increased since Everton agreed a deal to sign United’s out-of-contract midfielder Tom Cleverley.

But speaking in April, the Irishman gave no hint of wanting to leave Goodison.

“I have got time on my contract here,” he said. “As it stands, I am tied down just now anyway.

“I am happy here. Nothing has changed from day one. I love it and I am still loving life.

“I am happy here. There is nothing to really report. Honest to God I have not heard anything.

“It is new to me if a club is going to come in and buy me in the summer. It’s new to me. I have not spoken to anyone. I have not heard anything.

“There have been a few stories, but I am delighted to be here and I have many years still to come.”

McCarthy has made 76 appearances and scored three goals for the club.

He is currently with the Ireland squad preparing for their Euro 2016 qualifier against Scotland on Saturday.
