I suppose at the end of the day the judge of a player is their performances but McCarthy was playing well enough that United were thinking of buying him allegedly. I rate him. Regardless of his footballing ability which as some have mentioned I think is actually better then even he thinks. A player of his level of drive, determination, awareness and athletisim is a rare combination. He's still only 24, how many midfielders peak at 24? None. He has plenty of time to develop the other side of his game.
