James McCarthy

20 minutes.

Versus Chelsea.

On his debut.

Whilst we were being tw*tted all over the show.

I'll leave it at that.

Great, agreed.

So he came on and did a bit of running around didn't he?

That's fine, all well and good. But it's not a "good performance" is it? He didn't "do well". Gareth Barry did well. Naismith did well. Let's actually praise good performances instead of praising nothing.

If he had took that ball on and look for the counter attacking opportunity on his own, or took that ball on the chest and retained possession, then I'd be praising that. He also cacked himself on a 50/50 on the right touchline too that I didn't even mention.

As I said earlier, yes, it's early days, but for the same reasons you're annoyed at me for pointing out his faults, I'm annoyed for you lot pointing out imaginary positives.

It's you not being able to get round preconceived notion of a player and twisting what was essentially a useful but brief cameo into a negative thing.

I. Like. James. McCarthy.

I. Think. He's. A. Good. Player.

I've. Lost. Count. Of. The. Amount. Of. Times. I've. Said. This.

He did ok, saw the stuff Tubey is whining about but am not really worried since we were taking a lot of pressure and it was his debut. A lot of people give Mirallas credit for moving up to relieve pressure but getting McCarthy on enabled this. Anyway, early days and it's good that we finally have CM options.

But it wasn't a bad performance either.

You can do good things off the ball as well, mate, like closing down space.

Decent - good performance considering the circumstances, yes.

A 6.5/10. Solid.

Indeed. That's why I used the word "mediocre", which means of average quality.

But those errors I mentioned were unimpressive in isolation and worrying as it highlighted the concerns a lot of us had of him as a player before he signed - crab tactics, not imposing on the game. Early days but still worrying to see as you'd think he'd want to impress on his debut if he were a top player.

You. Like. Him. But. Not. At. The . Price. We. Got. Him. For. You. Condescending. ****.

If you don't want me to speak like that to you, then don't put words in my mouth. You stated as fact I had a pre-conceived notion of the player, and you have done on other threads, which is pure nonsense.

Actually means of only moderate quality. Not very good. Has fairly negative connotations, if you want to be pedantic, which I do.

Apparently shoring up the midfield, being neat and tidy when its needed without being spectacular is "mediocre".

Its a bit like saying Phil Neville gave the ball away 3 times from 49 passes "constantly". Saying McCarthy was mediocre because he passed to a team mate to keep posession and take the pressure off is daft and Tubey knows it.

Maybe Martinez told him not to venture too far from our own third?

He done what was needed in the game, nothing more nothing less.

Yes, but I didn't see much of that either. Barkley filled the slots in the second half in exactly the same way yet he was gassed after 65 minutes. Osman was doing that in the second half too.

If McCarthy puts a blinder in next time out, I'll rave review him for it, but I simply didn't see anything to justify the word "good" about him tonight.
