James McCarthy

He was worth 8 million tops. We have paid over 50% too much. However, lets not get detracted, he played well today.

If we'd only got Fellaini's release clause of £23.5m and paid £9m for McCarthy i don't think anyone would be complaining about the fee. The way i see it Manu paid the difference not us.

Yeah, but that extra was paid by Utd by them paying that premium in the Felli sale. But whatever. We get 4-6 years perhaps, then I would be ok with that.

Never understood this argument. If Utd had paid 35m for Fellaini would it have been ok to pay 21m for McCarthy just because they paid the extra?

That's just daft. We need money and we could have used the delta to bring someone else in. We overpaid, plain and simple. Respected, expert valuations put him nearer to 7m and IMO that's about right. Nobody else was in for him at that kind of money, plus if we'd have let him fade into obscurity in the championship we'd have probably got him for nearer 5m. Ericksen is a good comparison, the octopus from Porto looks the more complete player at that price, others like Defour would have been cheaper.

He's lucky to have Barry babysitting him and showing him the ropes. Frankly he looks lost at times but I hope he comes good.

Man United did pay the difference.

Didn't notice Barry or McCarthy at all in the match (except for that daft penalty) which is exactly what I like to see (or not see) from my deep-lying midfielders (unless they are pulling off unreal challenges to prevent a goal).

He has to live with the price but if having him and Lukaku on the pitch makes us play like we did in the second half then it is money well spent and never mind any of this united payed the difference sh*t.

Early days yes,but it appears as though McCarthys price tag is an issue to a certain section of our fan base who to a man consider him to be a championship player worth no more than £6 million.
Martinez signed him and thus far I've been very impressed with Roberto, the players he's brought in, his tactics, his positivity and self belief.
McCarthy played well against west ham,and was integral to our match winning 2nd half performance.
Get off his back and let's see how the young lad develops given a run in the starting 11.

He's going to be very good for us, no question. Daft challenge yesterday (even though Nolan milked it). One thing I did notice though was a moment before that he seemed to stop playing when Petric turned away from Jagielka inside the box instead of closing him down. That was strange. He should have snuffed out the danger there and then.

....yep, I noticed him stop. At the time I thought the ref had stopped the game, it was strange and I don't know what happened there.

Aren't the comments about McCarthy exactly the same as we got about Fellaini soon after he joined?

Can we not give the lad a few months not a few minutes before ****ging him off?

I trust Martinez and the fact that he rates McCarthy very highly must say something about McCarthy. Give the lad a chance.
