James McCarthy

I think McCarthy has the ability to be a good player against 'most' teams, but against the better opposition we face he often looks lacklustre.

The problem this season (and arguably last year as well) is that he is showing very little positive, forward-orientated football; it's all sideways.

This is slowing down our entire play as we're not offering anything attacking in the middle of the park.

He's a workhorse and nothing more - his passing and goal return are not that of a top midfield player. Against the better teams endeavour alone is not enough

Honest assessment. He is a water-carrier, a non-top four water carrier.

He was poor yesterday as was Barkley but Besic was the pits. So many of us were hoping that Besic and mc Carthy
could turn into a great duo in midfield but it looks like that that idea is a non-starter. Too similar in style, too small, too
predictable whatever it is but to be overwhelmed in the manner they were yesterday was hard to stomach.

If we're trying to be a free flowing footballing side even the DMs have to be comfortable on the ball. Hes hides from it

But even then apart from the chelsea game hes not been tyat good defensively. So many times he chases forward, gets turnt or misses a challenge so hes then chasing back, that usually results in a foul because he can't keep up

Think he loses the form he used to have 2 seasons ago. He has to show himself up more when we have the ball.

At the moment - or arguably, the majority of the last 18 months - he's the player in the Everton side who doesn't really seem to have a defined purpose within the side. Lennon, you know roughly what he is being tasked with. Barkley and Barry the same.

With McCarthy - a cultural high point tackle against Payet aside - you sort of struggle to see what he is being tasked to do. Break up the play? Barry does it a lot better. Transfer the ball quickly from defence / Barry to Barkley / attacking players? Doesn't do it very quickly and doesn't show much for the ball at the moment. Carry the ball forward? Nope, can't see him doing that.

For me it really neatly encapsulates the problem with Kone / McCarthy / Cleverley. They are on the pitch but their roles are, generously, unclear and they don't seem to be working to any sort of structured plan. They sort of exist in the shirt, not massively doing a lot, more scared of making a mistake than providing inspiration through risk. It's a massive irony - two of the three should take risks as they are among the safest in Martinez's affections and are unlikely to be dropped for mistakes!

He reminds me a bit of the other Jimmy Mac we used to have (McFadden). Lots of potential but not really progressing. Not only not progressing, but seemingly actually regressing.

We need a new midfield. We need to replace Barry at the end of next season or so - but that replacement needs to be bought this season and he needs to be in the team mostly with Barry in 2016/17. McCarthy and Besic should stay. McCarthy can do better and he has shown it in the past. Besic has shown it too - but not enough, party because of injuries, granted.

We need 2 things to bring these players on. A new manager, and a world class midfielder, even an old geezer. I'm dreaming of Yaya Toure. But it would probably stay a dream.

Was great in his first season, running all over the pitch putting tackles in. Not sure what exactly he does now. Doesn't score, doesn't create and his passing is average. Him and Cleverley aren't adding anything to the team in this system.

McCarthy for me...a tad overrated by us blues. Works hard but is he really that good? He frustrates me, when hes in the final third he almost finds an opposition player to stand next to so no one passes him the ball.
