James McCarthy

Completely anonymous. Where's the McCarthy of the first season when he tackled everything that moved?

Oh, that's right. Still riding on the back of Barry, whose legs have gone and can't carry JM anymore.

Barry's legs haven't gone, but yeah, pretty much the rest is spot on.

McCarthy would have been a good squad player for around £8m when brought in. He looked "OK" - Mr. Average, nothing more. That has proven to be the case, but compounded by the awful performance of the team around him too.

We got rinsed on the fee.

Maybe another manager without such blatant favourtism towards him could get the best out of him.

I think McCarthy is someone Martinez felt his entire philosophy revolves around and has done for years.

It's no surprise that a manager totally incapable of admitting being wrong and trying a Plan B will therefore stick with a player like that no matter what.

Indeed, if he had had the balls to change things up and go with one DM at home and go on the attack with a more offensive player, he might not have been in the position he's in now.

Hes so limited in his play, im not having the shouts that hes a DM so only needs to run about and tackle, besic has shown you can do the defensive bit while still passing forward, even gibbo showed it at the weekend.

Hell, hes not even doing the things hes supposed to be good at

Might just be me but he's looked as much out of his depth as Martinez for a while now.

I've never been on the bandwagon touting him as some super midfielder, but I'll admit he's played well in spells for us, that form however has completely gone.

It's a strange one. In his first season you could excuse his limited attacking talent because he ran round like a demon volleying everything that moved but he doesn't even seem to do that any more.

I used to love him but now he frustrates the life out of me. He's basically a microcosm of Martinez's time as manager.

Part of one of the worst centre midfield pairings I've seen at Everton - and I lived through Davies and Kilbane.

At least Barry was a decent water carrier once. McCarthy is a nothing player.

He's genuinely abysmal isn't he. Knackered after about ten minutes, contributes nothing going forward, essentially carrying a player in midfield.

When we play him and Cleverley in the same side we essentially play with a two man midfield - and that's only when Ross is in form and confident.

I said it at the time when biffs were calling him 'the next Roy Keane' - you cannot add ex-Wigan or Wigan standard players to the squad en masse and hope for an improvement. Cleverley, McCarthy, Kone, Alcaraz, McGeady - all nowhere near good enough. With the exception of Frodo Snivelley we probably multiplied the ex-Wigan's lot wages by three or four times; silk pyjamas all round for those biffs, they've won the lottery several times over.
