James McCarthy

McCarthy did so little today you'd be forgiven for thinking he wasn't on the field.

As I posted in the match thread - I honestly didn't know he was playing until someone mentioned they heard his name being mentioned by the commentators....I didn't hear that, but he had a shot as I was posting.

That must've been a good half hour into the game.

End of the day the midfield 4 is a mid table midfield.
Mccarthy bang average, Gibson been injured for 2yrs and had 3 starts this season. Cleverly free transfer wanted by us and villa. And Spurs sent Lennon to train with the kids. Says it all

If Martinez keeps his job. I want him gone for what it's worth. McCarthy and Barry will start the 1st game of next season

Fellaini destroyed him and Barkley all game. If a new manager wanted to move him on I wouldn't be the least bit arsed, he's offered nothing whatsoever for 18 months. Martinez can take him with him, they're not good enough for a club the size of us.

Its always good to see differing views on games because although he didn't do much in terms of passing it about or winning numerous tackles for me he was more important for us getting back in the game than Gibson and although i like Gibson i felt he was a big part of the reason we were so bad at pressing Utd throughout the 1st half.

Numerous times in the game McCarthy pressed a player on the ball not always to tackle but just to apply the pressure and he would turn around and 2 or 3 Utd players were in on the defence and you could see him gesturing as if to say where is the next press coming from. I've gone with 1 particular moment just after the 2nd half began to give an idea of what i am on about.

This was shortly after the 2nd half started gibson is a good 10-15 yards inside our half at this moment.

Within 20 seconds, McCarthy is then the one who gets back and makes the block from the Rooney shot.

Seconds later he presses on to Rooney again helping Barkley and both turn around and look to say why are you all so far back, at this point Gibson isn't even in picture he is sitting in next to Jags and Stones causing Cleverley to drop in leaving the whole left side open.
This is what i talk about when i say McCarthy for me didn't have a particularly bad game he was let down by those around him or the manager and the tactics that were set for each player either were completely different or individuals aren't listening to what they're being told.
It's that reason for me why we started to see Stones be the one to step out of the back line and Gibson slotted straight in at RCB and allowed Stones when we had the ball to basically be a midfielder and it improved our play, we started getting at them with pace, we were winning the ball back earlier, keeping them in their half all because we had more energy in midfield to break the lines.

Back to McCarthy though as far as i have seen he matched Gibsons stats but also contributed 2 blocked attempts on goal, his passing was obviously worse as no can defend how bad he is on the ball :D He was the guy who won the ball back which led to us getting the OG and then after our goal it was McCarthy again who robbed Fellaini of the ball setting us on a 4 v 2 which we should have done better with considering it took us another 3/4 passes and allowed all of Utd to get back.

Its easy to criticize him but he did a lot of unnoticed work yesterday but is viewed on his failed attempts at winning the ball back and not helping us from a passing point of view. I agree with most as well that he has been below par this season but it's wrong to ignore what he actually brings to the team even when he is being viewed as having a bad game, he's the type of player who is at his best in a team who presses and chases a game like we did in the 1st season, the FB's played so high up we had to press high but now the team setup is always so far back and it prevents what he is good at.

This is what ive been trying to say almost the entire season.

When McCarthy plays alongside Barry he is his 'legs' and not only on the pressing side (which you highlighted really well) but also defensively when Barry is too slow to come back its McCarthy covering the DM position.

As in my reply to @GrandOldTeam i think Gibson was sat far too deep yesterday meaning McCarthy had to press alone + sometimes as he was pressing you could see the ball passed around him and within a couple of seconds it was 20-30 yards past him with Gibson motionless.

I think ive slated Gibson enough on his own thread but other than passing he brings NOTHING to the team. Barry brings more overall but having BOTH him and McCarthy in DM is insane as you need 2 mobile players there to cover one another when pressing.

If you look at Barca, Bayern or any of the top sides they have ONE top player there. Even if you look at the RS when they had Mascherano, Alonso and Gerrard that midfield really only had Mascherano as the DM.

We would be FAR better off playing McCarthy and Besic and BOTH playing like Horne/Parkinson and pressing together as a partnership OR bringing in a playmaker/box to box player and only using one out and out DM.

We cant play Barry as sole DM as he hasnt got the pace or acceleration to be effective. It would need to be Besic OR McCarthy.

For me, McCarthy is a good player and i would hope we keep him but bring in one player at DM to push him onto the bench.

Lennon-- Barry--McCarthy--Cleverley

That is a mid table at best midfield....

Deulofeu--McCarthy/Besic -- ?? -- ??

We need to sign at least ONE LW player and ONE CM and ideally an upgrade on McCarthy/Barry.

That LW position is crucial also even defensively and for balance as Barry is always exposed by the opposition RB/RW as they run down the line and he runs back but they are past him on the pitch (even if not near him they are further down the pitch than him) and can centre the ball horizontally which leaves Barry behind the play.....McCarthy is the only midfielder along with Lennon who can get back to cover.

Its not Viera/Petit partnership thats for sure.

Just to add to my post above and this is one of the things ive highlighted a few times:

LW-- Kone £5mil /Cleverley Free
DM -- Barry Free
DM -- McCarthy £13mil / Besic £2.5mil (up to £4mil)
RW -- Deulofeu £4.2mjl / Lennon £4.5mil

To be fair to Martinez he's spent under £30mil on 7 players there in midfield with £13mil on McCarthy being the only amount noticable in comparison to "usual" amounts spent on top midfielders.

I think the £13mil fee was a bargain in the days when Stoke spend £18mil on a poorer player and Man Utd do the same...

If we played a pressing game even just in central midfield with a partner for McCarthy then we would see a totally different player...how can you have just one player there pressing? Its pointless.

Before all the knives come out on McCarthy id like to see him and Besic in the centre pressing.

Kone isn't a LW...he's been played on the left in a 4-3-3...and up top supporting Lukaku in a 4-4-2.

He is a Striker/Forward...not a winger and has never played as a winger.
