Seems like a real confidence player to me. When things weren't going well he always seemed to take the easy option. Even last season he was a hard tackling, harrying midfielder well able to break up play and get under the oppositions skin. This season, his confidence drained, the aggression disappeared (when it was there it was unhelpful) and all his passes were safe. To me this just shows that he's a player lacking in confidence. He's been under Martinez's tutelage for years It will be interesting to see how he does under someone new. I think theres definitely a player there!
He was far from crap though. But he was basically been asked to just sit by RM.
But he's got so much more to his game than that.
First season RM gave him freedom, and when we were at our most effective last season was when we played a 4-1-4-1 with him as part of the two infront of Barry - like yesterday.

What gives you this impression ? even when he was playing well in his first season he never showed glimpses of having 'so much more to his game'. He's good at grinding and doing the basics but as a footballer he's not progressed at all in three seasons

.....there were a few hints that he had another dimension to his game in that season, I remember one particulat sortee at pace and a first time pass on the run with the outside of his foot that set up a goal. I agree we haven't seen much of it of late, though.

....what a player he was. I've also loved watching Kante this season. Truly good defensive midfielders are really appreciated by team mates and Coaches.
McCarthy is a very versatile player. Yes, he can defend but if allowed he can go box to box and we saw yesterday that he has an eye for goal.
I think he is a player that likes a high tempo game. When RM first came I think we were moving the ball more quickly, but as the seasons moved on we became more laboured and easier to defend against. At the start of the season I think that Deulofeu was in such brilliant form that it covered some of our ponderous play.
I would expect that McCarthy will be a big player for whichever manager comes in.
I thought it significant that Besic didn't even make the bench yesterday.
