James McCarthy

....I know one of the back room staff at Wigan and he has nothing but good words to say about McCarthy. I think it's useful to have that insight. Ultimate professional, lives for the game, tea total, demands 100% commitment from his team mates and has his say in the dressing room.

He's been disappointing this season but it'll be interesting to see how he does working with a new manager. I wouldn't give up on him yet.

What gives you this impression ? even when he was playing well in his first season he never showed glimpses of having 'so much more to his game'. He's good at grinding and doing the basics but as a footballer he's not progressed at all in three seasons

His goal yesterday, his assists earlier this season. The performances against United and Newcastle and Southampton last season where he was given a free role.

With McCarthy, he either needs to be a purely defensive player, or a box to box player making third-man runs (think the one we scored vs Sotton RM's first season is a perfect example).

Fans are really quick to criticise, but many people within the game rate him very highly. He needs to nail down one position though. He isn't capable of raking passes so people need to stop expecting him to do that, for one.

I personally think he's at his best when in the box to box role. Some think he's more of a defensive sitter but for me, he lacks the passing range to fill that role.

He likes a drink by all accounts but yeh, on the whole he's extremely professional and I really don't understand the stick he gets.

He's not been great at all lately, but when he has played well, the team has as well. He makes us tick when he's on form, simple as. And he gets Everton.

vs Southampton...Rom scoring the winner.

I've mentioned it before but his assist for Rom against Stoke around Christmas (when he then went off injured a minute later after only just coming back from the one that he picked up when we were 2-0 up against Bournemouth [coincidently the game that turned our season...]) - it was a superb touch and pass in a tight area, right on the edge of the box.

McCarthy's obvious qualities are:
- Pace over 10 yards
- Energy
- Short, crisp passing
- Tackling

His faults are that he doesn't get forward enough (though I think this is down to a system - not the player - as proved yesterday).

He's also not got the best passing range which means that, although he can pick them out, he's never gonna be a deep-lying playmaker, and he tends to play it a bit safe (though again that could be due to the system?). He's not going to beat three or four players but he rarely concedes possession either.

He's at his best, IMO, when given freedom to be that box to box player.

He scores a good goal and has a decent game and all of a sudden he's turned into zidane hes an average prem player no more no less.it was Norwich for gods sake.
This a thousand times over. If we are serious about competing with the best then he is no where near good enough

Im calling this one early, he will thrive under a new manager to becone of the best midfielders in the league in a couple of seasons, lets not forget hes played almost his whole career under Martinez coaching.

mccarthy's clearly capable of more

Has been said throughout his career and will most probably continue to be said throughout his career. We aren't really in a position to get rid of him yet, but we will require much better quality if we want to reach the top 4, which was our objective until a couple of years ago.

I've been very critical of McCarthy this year but I think he can do much better. First year he was excellent, the last two been very meh and found out. Would like to see him stay on, could be very useful.

Still shouldn't be in the starting XI though.

Personally, not a fan but I can see he has some attributes. The good thing about a new manager is that most of the players will get a clean slate and we get to see how they fit into a new managers idea's and system. i don't know exactly how much Martinez restrained certain players from playing.

Boss to hear that.

He does what he's asked I think. Hopefully the next manager asks more.

Not many seem to rate him highly enough to actually try to sign him though, either when we got him or at any time since.
