James McCarthy

Not many seem to rate him highly enough to actually try to sign him though, either when we got him or at any time since.

Manchester United and Spurs were extremely interested after his first season with us, and actually last summer as well.

I know for a fact we rebuffed an offer of £20mil from United in August 2014.

2 assists all season and 8 in his whole Everton career, I just can't get behind the idea that he's got potential going forward.

But his most effective performances (not just goals/assists) have come when he's been given a role as a box to box player

This a thousand times over. If we are serious about competing with the best then he is no where near good enough

He's more than good enough and he's a player that every successful team needs.

Let's see how his form goes after he comes back from the Euros and he's playing under a new manager.

So you're saying we could have sold McCarthy and snapped up Schneiderlein instead?

SAKE

Think sometimes people look at a player and ignore everything else other than their quality with the ball.

McCarthy isn't a world beater with the ball at his feet but the likes of Leicester with Kante and Southampton with Wanyama have shown that with the right system, a player who is full of energy and athleticism in midfield can be a huge asset

I'm nowhere near ready to give up on McCarthy just yet

McCarthy's energy and willingness to press the ball were wasted at times under Martinez's Everton side - I'd like to think that with the right manager in charge, he has qualities which could really help us

Hes not a patch on them 2 lads

Dunno, I'd obviously take Kante over McCarthy based on the last 12 months but Wanyama? He's world class without the ball but Championship standard with it. Know a few Southampton fans through work and their opinion of Wanyama is similar to that of a lot of our fans re McCarthy.

Not arsed on the ball, he actually does his job off it. Mccarthy just runs around like a headless chicken and gets caught out

Harsh that

I don't think it's any coincidence that our defensive record is much better when McCarthy plays

I do agree that him legging it about unbalances us at times though as nobody is going to press with him. If we did it as a unit, he'd be really effective at it. Him and Lennon have a lot of energy and intensity when pressing but they're ultimately let down because we don't do it as a unit like the best pressing sides do (Spurs and Liverpool in this country)

Hes brainless.

And its not the player, its the type as to why we look better. Same when Mo is in, need the legs next to barry

Think either McCarthy or Besic will step up a level next season alongside a new CM. Wonder which it will be.

You know that 'for a fact'? How exactly?

Very very very rare that a club like United would go as far as to actually lodge a bid for a player without doing a bit of work in the media to smooth the path first (as we know from experience with Baines, Fellaini and Rooney) so seems odd that this wasn't reported at the time.

I don't believe for a second that spurs were interested in him. They didn't sign anyone else for that position which would be a bit odd if they were willing to pay £20m for him. Think that was simply talk from his agent because he wanted a new contract.
