Somebody I work with. United fan who used to work for Goal, FourFourTwo among others, and he was reliably informed at the time - he mentioned it the other week when we played them in the semi.

You know that 'for a fact'? How exactly?
Very very very rare that a club like United would go as far as to actually lodge a bid for a player without doing a bit of work in the media to smooth the path first (as we know from experience with Baines, Fellaini and Rooney) so seems odd that this wasn't reported at the time.
I don't believe for a second that spurs were interested in him. They didn't sign anyone else for that position which would be a bit odd if they were willing to pay £20m for him. Think that was simply talk from his agent because he wanted a new contract.
I don't doubt for a second you were told that mate, but being told 2 years later by someone who once worked for Goal and 442 is hardly knowing it 'for a fact' is it? I mean, we're not talking Woodward and Bernstein levels here.see my below post mate. I'm not trying to get into an argument (we had enough of them and you were proved right about Bobby ) but I know that United had that bid knocked back (2 years ago now like).
Well, Spurs didn't sign anybody because Poch instead tried Dier there? Plus they had about 8 centre mids. They were interested though, but never as seriously as united were

Yeah the fact that Pochettino used Dier there is kind of what I was alluding to. It's very rare that a manager would be willing to fork out £20m on a player, and then say 'ah well, nevermind i'll do without'. Chairmen don't tend to be willing to pay £20m on a player to play in a position the manager isn't 100% convinced he needs to fill, and as McCarthy himself has said Spurs weren't willing to stump up £12m for him in 2013, it seems unlikely they would pay more 2 years later after he'd suffered repeated injuries over the previous 12 months.
Obviously I don't know for sure, but there's very little evidence that he's been a man in demand. If you take a look at his comments in this article: http://www.standard.co.uk/sport/foo...s-pleased-with-manchester-united-9634474.html
He sounds like he would be very open to a move to United (the sort of comments that would get him castigated were he Belgian rather than Scottish, but that's a different argument) but he signed a new contract with us when such teams were supposedly interested in him. Seems unlikely to me.
"But McCarthy, I watched him all season at Everton. He got his manager sacked. The guy does nothing."http://www.benchwarmers.ie/football...es-mccarthy-does-nothing-argues-dunphy/60218/
McCarthy does nothing? Thoughts Blues? Watched him today and bar a few tackles he seemed more of a liability and not of much use going forward or defending

“He’s strolling around the pitch like a traffic cop, pointing here and there, doing nothing himself.”
Ouch
Yeah but tbh he wasnt even average today, he might as well have sat on the sideline and watched the match would've saved him all the running. That season for us he wasnt all that either.Anyone that listens to eamon dunphy knows he's a full ass ####. Makes suffer up to suit his argument
He covered a lot of ground and denied sweden space. He isn't ever goin to dictate a game he's not that type of player. He's been made a total scapegoat when last season every player bar barry consistentEly were way off what they should be. I'd judge him on next season rather then last season. His first season here he was a crucial player for usYeah but tbh he wasnt even average today, he might as well have sat on the sideline and watched the match would've saved him all the running.
