In fairness, i was one of mccarthys biggest fans up until this season. When he plays well its so obvious cos its such a bloody rarity these days. Hes hiding in midfield doing A LOT of pointing rather than taking responsibility and getting on the ball himself. He could be so much better than he currently is these days and thankfully i genuinely believe Koeman will get it out of him. He had it too easy under Martinez. Koeman played in that position plenty of times in his career and will not stand for McCarthys current level of performance. Koeman will make him work as hard as he bloody can and wont stand for anything less. Im actually quite excited to see McCarthy under Koeman. He could be bloody brilliant again!

If Koeman decides to do his agents another favour this summer and buy one of their clients (Blind and Wijnaldum) McCarthy is very vulnerable.

Personally hope that El Fraudo gets another big job somewhere and takes him and Snivelley away

McCarthy got to step up his game or Koeman will ship him out. Dunphy has some good points about McCarthy

He hates McCarthy because he's Scottish-born, though.

McCarthy on top form is superb. He was immense for Ireland against Germany in qualifying earlier this season - the game that pretty much got them to the Euros.

Btw, Koeman won't be selling McCarthy. He'll be one of the first names on the teamsheet IMO.

I think he may look to use him how he did Davis - as a box-to-box midfielder. We'll see how it works out.

If McCarthy plays well the entire team usually ticks. He was brilliant in his first season, and he hasn't been that bad in the last two. Injuries haven't helped him get that consistency back, though. But it should be noted that our league campaign fell apart when he got injured against Bournemouth.

He had one good season for us IMO, relies on Barry to guide him through too much IMO!

It depends what role he's given. He's very good at harrying and pressing and closing down. In a team that did no pressing under RM that was sometimes defunct. RK likes to press high, which means McCarthy will be key, IMO

If he plays as he has for the majority of the last 2 seasons then Koeman will ship him out no doubt. That's why he has to step up because over a period of time he has been ineffective. His ball skills and passing has to improve 100% and making himself available to receive instead of hiding. If he can get the consistency levels of his 1st season then fair enough but he has dropped of so much that calling him average is a compliment.

I'm more than happy to give him another chance under a new manager. He's been managed by Martinez for 7/8 years, that can't be a good thing for him. Hopefully he be a much better player with a manager that doesn't call him phenomenal for doing the bare minimum.

He'll have to step up his game mate, yes, but if he does that there's no way RK's letting him go.

His passing and 'ball skills' are really not bad at all. There's some prime examples from this season where both have been top notch.

I just think he can tend to go missing in a game where he isn't given a very specific role. He thrives when he can be an influence, whether that's as a holding midfielder (like against Germany in qualifying) or a box-to-box player (in his better games for us). When he's kind of just chucked into the team in between roles, a bit like Barry is (except Barry thrives at being able to do a bit of everything), he's not effective.

And he may have been below par, yet whenever he is in the team, we've still looked better.

I stress again, our season completely fell apart in that Bournemouth match. We were 2-0 up and cruising until McCarthy went off injured...
