That panel who slated him today might as well be on repeat. Honestly they have been saying the same thing over and over again for last 2 years. They always have to have a scapegoat and a hero. They love wes hooligan (who had a good game today) and hate Mccarthy. I mean hate. Dumbphy is a deluded old man who needs to pack in his job and grow tomatoes . Mccarthy wasn't outstanding today but put in his shift tackling blocking allowing players like wes hooligan to florish

After the German game dunphy said if holohan was German they would build a team around him they had no one like him. Ozil, Kroos etc might disagree.
That's how deluded he is

Did you hear him day he got Martinez the sack? Mccarthy defo banged his daughter or something.

McCarthy is a good squad member...but he 'ain't all that'.
Everton has a lot of players in this category...we tend to over-rate our squad. Having said that, I lend most of them some significant critical slack; hell, they played under a farcically inept manger for the past 3 years.

I always get the feeling that Glenn Whelan is some sort of hero among the Irish set up which is why he gets a regular game for them. Him and McCarthy are similar players and neither have an ounce of creativity or spark in them so playing both together is a waste of time. They only need one of them.

McCarthy's fine, just unfortunately caught up in a kind of psychological and tactical limbo for the past couple of seasons. He has a bit more about him than the average workhorse defensive midfielder but, under Martinez, most attempts to make his game more expansive have ended with him looking confused and ineffective.

He's no playmaker. For him to be a truly important component in a side he needs to be the gut-busting tackle-everything player who keeps to certain areas of the field and offers space and protection to more technical players. I think Koeman has a better sense of footballers' capabilities than Martinez, so we might see an improvement next season.

Criticism of this person is justified (like almost every member of our senior squad).

New contract and a poor season as a thank you from James. Just like Arteta. Just like mirallas and a few others

If his place in the team is going to be justified next season I think he needs to purely become a destroyer. Gattuso simply tackled everything and passed it 5 yards to a better player; that's all we need McCarthy to do. He's got the biggest engine in the midfield (under proper training) and I think he can be our sole defensive midfielder next season if his attacking responsibilities are completely cut.

.....couple of concerns from me, often he chases players down but it's a bit headless. In last night's game he chased a player down on the far touch line who easily skipped past him and wasn't caught. If you run at somebody full pelt it isn't effective unless you check to block or time a tackle. Reid was great at that, chased with purpose and as good a timer of a tackle you would see.

My other concern is the lack of other dimensions to his game. He's shown he can pick a pass but rarely does so to great effect. Busy players often flatter, Leicester's Kante has set the standard for defensive midfielders.
