James McCarthy

McCarthy was fantastic last night.

Not a coincidence that his two best performances for Ireland have come when Whelan was abset (1-0 v Germany, 1-0 v Italy). He had serious pressure on him to perform after fierce scrutiny from the Irish media (and rightly so)

Hendrick - McCarthy - Arter will be a midfield trio we'll see alot for Ireland down the line

Yes the one were her cut him in half as MaCarthy he is that slow - its payer style Payet I want In our midfield not a championship player which he would have been if relegated with Wigan!
That really is not right,
Yes, McCarthy cut Payet down to size, I didn't hear any of us complaining about it at the time. Payet was one of the players of last season and McCarthy ensured he didn't cause us any real damage. I don't believe it was his intention to injure the player, but sometimes it happens.
The injury was unfortunate , but injuries like that happen, it's just that the West Hams fans squealed like stuck pigs long after it happened.
We had Cleverley injured in a similar way against Spurs and just got on with it. In previous seasons I remember Jagielka, Arteta and Anichebe to name just three and again , we just got on with it. If memory serves me right , I think Jagielka was injured against Arsenal last season as well in a bad tackle..it happens.

McCarthy was brilliant for us when we finished fifth, the fear was that Spurs were going to offer 24m and we were going to lose him.
He is still only 24 , he has had some bad luck with injuries and yes his form dipped last season , but, if that is the barometer then Barkley, Stones, Lukaku, Deulofeu and Baines must all go as well.

The fact he is poor in the air defensively, and has the ball skills and a pass that can open up an opposing defence!
MaCarthy is a headless defensive midfielder two a penny in my eyes!

Each to their own and all that but we have never seen Stones play in midfield. Its not as easy as just chucking someone into a new position.

Personally I dont think he would make a good mid as he is not energetic/dynamic enough. He is an elegant player who likes to take his time on the ball.

He was basically playing as one in I think the 2nd half of the semi and he was the best player on the pitch

Slight quibble with this. It's been two seasons in a row he has been below par. And that was below par before we got Moshiri. The other players you mentioned all had purple patches within that time frame (except maybe Baines but he is a "legend").

He will shine again with proper motivation and management.

Seamus really got every player going last night with his tackle after 30 seconds but he gave James particularly strong support after a brave headed clearance.

I would not attempt to rate him based on RM's last couple of years in charge.
