James McCarthy

McCarthy had an outstanding first half , the French upped the tempo in the second half and overran a hardworking but very limited Irish team.
Take no notice of those who criticise McCarthy as it will all be down to the manager anyway to decide what role he plays. I think he will be impressed.

He plays very well for Ireland whenever he's in that holding role.

He breaks up play well and keeps possession ticking over. The thing is, in that Ireland side, there's not many people ahead of him who are able to spark any brilliance or creativity, so to speak.

Put him in that position with Barkley (or Sneijder) and another 'dominating' centre mid with an ability on the ball (Witsel, e.g. - could this be Besic(?)) and you'd be on to a winning formula IMO.

No mans land for the first and guilty of ball watching on the second and not tracking back to sweep up

The second was in no way his fault. Duffy and Keogh both went for Giroud. McCarthy was 10 yards behind the play with every other Irish player because the chance came from a long ball. Entirely the centre backs on that occasion.

He was to blame in the Belgium game, like, but not today

One player who has really impressed me at this tournament - and it's a shame we won't get to see more of him now - is Milan Badelj for Croatia.

He reminds me of Barry in that he is really tidy on the ball but is always in the right place at the right time.

Now, I'd love somebody like Krychowiak but he seems almost certain to follow Emery to PSG.

Too busy ball watching, if he reads the play behind him he see 2 cbs going walkies and griezmen running into the space and he can be in a position to track the running and put some pressure on. No intelligence

He's nothing on Gattuso but that kind of role is what he should do. Martinez telling him he can score goals and stuff just confused him.

I think he's a player who thrives as long as he's given a set role.

In his first season he was allowed to play as a box-to-box player and he was class, but last two years it's almost like he's got mixed up between that and being a holding player (down to tactics imo, and McCarthy's individual limitations as well)

It's no surprise that his best games for Ireland have come when he's played in a holding role, as he's just given that job and he excels at it. He isn't the best passer in the world, but for us it doesn't matter as we have other players who can do that. Ireland don't.

By that logic every other player in the Irish side was too busy ball watching as well. If anything, Coleman (who had a great game) should have been over on the cover.

You're nit-picking when there is really no basis for it.

Indeed. Guard the defence, pass it 5 yards to a better player. Rinse and repeat.

Spot on. There's not many midfielders available who have 'the whole package'. The ones that do cost £35mil+

You put McCarthy as the base of a midfield three next to Barkley/Sneijder, and another midfielder to compliment them and be the 'dominant' one, I think we're on to a winner.

Add into that the back up of Barry and Besic (I still think Gibbo will be sold, not sure on Clevs)

He's supposedly a dm, it's his job to pick these things up and sweep it up.
