James McCarthy

McCarthy: I made a mistake on that. The pertinent point though was that he was a massive success with the fans that first season and earned a big reputation...now some restless souls want him gone because we've apparently got a few bob and we can indulge their Fantasy Football wishes.

I tak a more sobre view of form and player's worth myself.

Ha Ha....a 'decent first season'.

Yeah mate. It put some very decent daylight between our old PL performances and points total and what we saw that season.

It's a benchmark season. It's not a 'decent' season.

Mate you made the mistake time after time and had used that award to support your argument

How did Jelavic do the first season he arrived mate, how was he percieved by the fans after his first 4-5 months here, and what was he shown to be in the next couple of seasons? - ditto for McCarthy - a very good first seaosn when the team had a good defensive structure, as that fell apart and more pressure was put on him in his role - he collapsed and was shown not up to it at the best level, at best a bottom half player.

McCarthy has had one good season in his career and a lot of average ones, he has flopped massively for his country as well, he just isn't that good mate, if someoens willing to pay 15m and in this crazy market they likely will do then get rid and get someone in more capable than a very one dimensional player

You've caught Fantasy Football fever again mate. I dont know who you have in mind to come in if he goes, but I'd say this is your new hobby horse a la Yarmolenko.

It's like you fixate on bringing a player in and every other player in the vicinity of their position is so much collateral damage.

It's a modern squad game mate. Besic is gone, imo. Count him out. Barry is at an age where he can just 'go' overnight. Gueye is, well, we dont know yet. He could be good, he could drop off in form. I see no reason whatsoever to see McCarthy out. And as far as we can tell from Koeman (who apparently is straight talking isn't he?) neither does he.

Paper talk, I'll be bound.

Some seem utterly desperate to see him through the door and out like he's a jiggy bag full of anthrax.

It'd be interesting to check the vaults from a couple of seasons back when he was player of the season to see if any contradictions turn up.

I agree mate.

As said, I do think he tends to limit himself at times but the other day he was realistically the only player to take off.

He's not a natural wide player and was in their against Spurs primarily to keep things tight. In situations like that where Coleman was out, it was a good move by the manager and equally a good display by McCarthy.

He definitely has more to give and I think he will need to if he's going to be anything more than a back-up player, but I don't particularly want to see him leave.

He's not sooper doooper enough though.

We need someone called McCarthinho in there who costs £50M.

Have no idea about cm's we could get in mate, but assume walsh and koeman do as they have been sniffing around a few, and seem to already have gotten one good one in gueye who no one saw coming.

One thing for sure - the manager isn't happy with McCarthy or else why have we been bidding and making enquiries on players who would push him further out the door?

Long as they improve the team - honestly don't give a flying one who we bring in this summer, long as the ones shown to be not up to it are shipped off (including McCarthy)

BTW don't do fantasy footy mate since i was about 20 :)

We've been linked with B2B cm's all over the show. We clearly want to upgrade him if possible. Personally I hope we do because if Walsh and Koeman bring in a player to replace him then I trust them to be better than McCarthy and that's not necessarily a slight on the player.

For once I kind of agree with Dave. I still think there's a player in there. He's limited though, and I think the early signs are that Gueye does what James does but a bit more too, so naturally he might seem a bit unnecessary.

But Besic is wrecked, Barry as good as he is shouldn't be out in a position where we need him 100% of the time, Gueye looks great but it's early days and Gibson is Gibson.

I would only sell James if we got a good offer and had an ideal replacement lined up. The hatred he gets is a bit over the top. Koeman seemed to laugh off the suggestion that he wasn't in his plans, and I'm inclined to belive him given his frank nature with the players who he wants to move on.

Think theres a difference in handling type of players though mate.

Utterly useless ones he wants out asap then yeah he can be ruthless because he doesn't want them and won';t sue them - Niasse, McGeady and probably 2-4 others given what his words where the other day fall in that catagory. And doesn't seem like he's bothered abotu what we get in for those he just wants shut asap.

Then theres gonna be others - ones with a decent re-sale value that may or may not leave, and if he comes out and slates them publicly, then he's not only guaranteeing they will be no use at all if needed by us but also that if we are willing to sell then he will have utterly wrecked any chance of a decent fee we can get for them (McCarthy, Lennon and Cleverley all probably fall into that catagory - if a team offers us a decent fee then we will shift them on - obviously aided if we get someone in those positions first as well)

Of course mate. We have no idea to what extent Koeman rates McCarthy, but I think it's clear he would be happy to keep him.

The question for me is actually whether or not McCarthy would want to stay. I can't see him being a first choice player come September.

If we can get anyone in that we are after, which seems to have been a lot in the centre then think he'd be off sharpish mate

The thing is, Koeman clearly stated the other day McCarthy's future lies with Everton.

The article claiming he might leave was genuine conjecture. 'It's because he got taken off at West Brom'

McCarthy played very well against Spurs, but I do sometimes feel he tends to play it too safe.

However, I do think Koeman rates him, and he'll be starting in midfield tonight I imagine.
Did he though? I know that's what the headlines said, but when you look at the actual quotes they're far from emphatic. I can't find them at the moment unfortunately but he basically said "He started at the weekend so I'm not sure why you're so certain i'll be selling him". He could have said "No chance" or "He's very important to us" or even "It would take a big bid for us to consider it" but instead he effectively sidestepped the question.

he actually said 'James McCarthy's future lies with Everton'
