James McCarthy

Yeah, United played us perfectly yesterday, they were made up for Barry and McCarthy to have the ball.

It's times like that when you need Barkley in the middle to run with the ball from deep to open up the game.
i cant think of many top teams who play two defensive midfielders, and lets not pretend their fullbacks dont bomb on just as much as ours do

Exactly, I honestly wouldn't mind Osman being in there over two holding players. At least he's forward thinking and would open the game up for us.

it'd be alright if we were actually defensively solid because of it, but were shipping goals anyway even with 2 of them, and if we did open the game up like you say, we have the players to hurt teams a lot more than we are

Except hes as weak as a child and slower than most pensioners.

We need more of a ball player in there though and the 2 we have in gibson and besic are always broken

Osman is done mate.
I think we should scrap the 2 holding midfielders because we concede a lot of chances with them there.

The biggest problem with the Barry/ McCarthy thing these days is the way we are using them now. Although the personnel hasnt changed much since 2 seasons ago, the style has. They were perfect in Martinez' first season, because they mainly stayed deep, and would slot back if the full backs bombed on. Meaning the rest of our midfield, Barkley, Mirallas, Deulofeu etc. were free to just bomb on and get on with attacking instead of having to worry about what was going on behind them.

Im not sure whats happened, but Martinez' is just overly cautious now. Okay, I know Baines is injured and Galloway is doing a good job covering, but our full backs just arent getting forward the way they used to, and so Barry and McCarthy are staying central, and we are playing negative wide players like Naismith and Lennon, because they will cover the full backs. I said in the Howard thread that I think this is because he doesnt trust Howard and the defence, so is basically employing more negative wide players, but how many defensive players can we have? No Kone, Deulofeu or Mirallas, and the only players joining in attacks from open play are Lukaku and Barkley, and they are so easily outnumbered. We are trying to play the same system as we did 2 seasons ago, but using it completely differently and it doesnt work. Either change the way we're playing, or go back to using it the same way we did 2 seasons ago.

He is incredibly overrated, and that's not just by Everton fans, opposition fans seem to laud him as well.

He's got a great engine on him, that's probably his biggest asset but playing him and Barry together doesn't half stifle our attack.
Like Naisy...both Naismith and McCarthy don't half put a shift in and are two of Everton's key personnel. Without McCarthy and Naisy , we are just not the same team.

For all the talk of McCarthy's 'great engine', I'm pretty sure Barry consistently covers more ground than him, when you look at the stats.

He's like that one lad in school who knows he's not very good at football so tries to impress the coach by just running loads whenever he is looking. Seems to be taboo to say but he neither has the positional awareness nor the passing range to be a top player. He's physically strong, quick and can retain the ball but sadly a lot of midfielders in this league can boast these attributes.

im a bit pissed but thats sarcasm isnt it? please?

Not sure you understand what sarcasm is mate.

But no, I wasnt totally serious, but we have ourselves shifted away from 2 holding midfielders to a degree, El Fraudo has to play Barry and McCarthy, which means McCarthy is tasked with playing as a number 8, which means he doesnt impress as much as he would by being the holding midfielder.
