James McCarthy

I don't like the way we turn on our own players, McCarthy has done nothing wrong in terms of Everton. He isn't good enough to play for us anymore, that is not his fault. He is doing the descent thing for himself and the club and moving on. We get a fee he gets to play football.
A pity some more of our other playing staff don't take the same path and move on.
McCarthy obviously has professional pride about wanting to play week in week out. Whereas niasse and mcgeady....

There is no way on God's earth that Celtic will part with £20m, their famous biscuit tin is still alive and kicking and they are very much a selling club, having David 'Brendan' Brent onboard has made no odds to that.

They might have it now they're in the group stages, they probably see him as a long term investment

Is there anything to suggest McCarthy is close to going or is it just rumours from rags like the Mail and Mirror like last season where they said he was destined for Spurs? Or is it because of what some fans on the forums claim they think they know that he isn't in the managers plans despite playing in the first 3 games of the season before this reported groin problem?

I've always thought McCarthy has something to offer Everton, and still do. It's obvious that Barry is the superior footballer in terms of creativity so he is inevitably behind him in the pecking order and now we have Gueye. Gueye has been one of our best players at the start of the season and unfortunately for McCarthy, he's showing a lot more drive and intensity to his game than McCarthy has managed in the past 2 seasons, so it's not too surprising to think that Koeman doesn't see him as first choice, especially as Gueye was signed by Koeman.

Having said that, top clubs need big squads with different kinds of players in them. It's interesting that loads on here are calling for us to get rid, forgetting that if Barry or Gueye get injured we're left with Cleverley who loads don't rate either. Are Besic and Gibson really adequate cover when they're both injury prone? That's before mentioning the right back position where Koeman has identified that McCarthy can help out if needed, with Coleman now injured.

We're fortunately going through a period where we are doing well and don't have too many injuries to key players at the moment. That will change as the season goes on and Barry is aged 35. He won't be in the starting 11 past this season. We haven't had the most difficult fixtures yet and already people are making wild claims about how great Holgate and Gueye are after a handful of games (which they have been so far), but an injury to either of them, or a dip in form could result in someone like McCarthy coming in and doing a job for a few games.

If he wants to go and we can get suitable cover in central midfield then I don't see it as a big problem but people need to consider the squad and not just the first 11. And suggestions that McCarthy is a poor player are just wrong.

Not saying they haven't got it Mutley, they very much have, just saying saying there is no way they will outlay that much and never have.
I live in Scotland and follow the domestic scene closely, the Celtic owner Dermot Desmond is something of a tight wad and keeps the Parkhead finances on a tight budget.
Putting it into perspective the most they have ever paid for a player is £6m back in 2000 for Chris Sutton.

He needs good on-form players around him then I still think he can do a job for us at squad-level: he's tidy and methodical. But upon seeing Gana show us what can be done in that position it does look like we've outgrown the need for a James McCarthy as a regular first-teamer.

25 years of age mate. He's got years ahead to do what he does best and add to his game.

Unreal that anyone should turn on a player of this quality for us in the past. God help Gueye if/when he falls off any sort of decent standard. He'll be slaughtered.

aye, given the choice and lack of 20m bid I'd keep him still.

Isn't this massively at odds with your view on Baines/Galloway though? Especially as Baines has been a far better player over many more than just one season than McCarthy has.

No mate, I'm saying that Baines shouldn't be the starting LB. Ability wise he's more than adequate to deputise. The Mccarthy detractors are simply saying get rid....and they'll do exactly the same when Gueye's form goes.
