West Ham fan here in actual peace (unlike the last one who sort of came on here and immediately attacked you),

My perspective of the tackle: In my opinion, the tackle was a red card offense. I know some will disagree, but that's just my opinion. I would have actually had no problem with the original tackle, due to the fact that he did get a bit of the ball before. No complaints from me there. It was the scissor motion after that, in my opinion, was born of frustration, and made it a poor challenge. I believe any tackle with a scissor motion should be retroactively banned, from this point forward. I've been on the end of one of these, and it isn't pretty. You won't hear any of this "thug" or "hitman" complaints about McCarthy, as it's just one of those things that happen in the game. Players make bad challenges all the time, and unfortunately players get injured.

I think the overreaction from some of our fans is ridiculous. Am I unhappy with our best player being out for 3 months? Hell yeah I am! The good news is we have strength in depth and I do believe we will recover from this. Lanzini will fill the void left by Payet, and we have players like Antonio, Moses, Song, Obiang, Zarate etc to fill the void left in our midfield. You guys are one of our rivals this season for the top 7-10 places in the league, and it'll be an interesting season for sure.

I think the reason a lot of our fans are upset is because we all like watching a player of Payet's ability. It also doesn't help that you guys are a bit of a bogey team and we always seem to play poorly against you lot and have injuries as well (not from bad challenges, just injuries in general. The Valencia injury was the result of an unfortunate landing from a perfectly fair challenge, for example).

Sorry for the lengthy post, good luck for the rest of the season (except I hope you finish below us, of course ;)).
That's a reasonable approach of the incident. Sad for your guys you'll be missing Payet for the coming months, but incidents like this will always happen as long as football remains a contact sport. Wouldn't have it any other way.

However, 7th-10th place? Have to say I got a bit more ambition for Everton than that. 4th-7th makes up for a good season, 7th-10th will make it a dissapointing one.

I don't get into that just because there is such variance in how the game is officiated from ref to ref that the statement has no meaning. My personal opinion on what constitutes a red or a yellow is essentially irrelevant.

I have seen people sent off for that tackle; I have seen people not sent off for that tackle.

A red would not have been unreasonable. I don't think a yellow is unreasonable either.

We had a similar tackle (and injury) to Cleverly earlier this year. It does suck.

Oh no you don't. ;)

We are?!?!?! I'd be utterly furious if we finished below seventh.

I'm assuming you hope that every year. Here's hoping it turns out like pretty much every other year. ;) Do you want to send us some mars bars?

Joking aside very reasonable opposing fan post. Cheers for that. Have some rep.

West Ham fan here. I come in peace.

Would appreciate it if some of you take a look at McCarthy's tackle on Amaltifano last year, then look again at the one on Payet on Saturday. You really think McCarthy didn't mean it? He has deliberately set out to hurt two players.

Some of you (too few it seems) know you've got a Neanderthal playing for you whose sole objective is to take out more skilful players. Most are making fools of themselves defending the indefensible.

I always thought you had more class than the red half of the city. Boy was I wrong.

I give up. I can't compete with the legendary Scouse wit.

Why wouldn't you call for retroactive banning when Cleverley was injured earlier this year.

Fair comment, I didn't mean it like that. I just meant that from this point forward (not including the McCarthy challenge), the FA should create a new rule that for any challenges in the future, any tackle involving a scissor-like motion would be hit with a 1-3 game ban, depending on the severity. This would perhaps prevent players from doing this in the future, with fear of a ban in the back of their minds. I would have been happy if they had introduced this after the Dier challenge, as maybe it would have prevented the injury to Payet. The McCarthy challenge would have been perfectly legitimate had it not involved the scissor-motion afterwards.

I do think that our medical staff were daft in letting him play on. I'm sure if we had been up 3 or 4-0, they would have taken him off. The ineptitude of our medical staff has been known for years now, and I do believe that would have lessened the extent of the injury.

Yeah I saw the Dier challenge, and I thought the same thing then that I do now, I don't like those challenges. Whether that is due to personal experience, or just that I think it's just as bad as a two footed tackle.

As far as where you'll finish, I would imagine that you guys would be aiming for higher than that, as you have a history of finishing pretty high up the table. That's just my opinion, as I believe the top 6 is becoming harder and harder to break into with all of the money in today's game. The top 6 usually comprises of both Mancs, Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool, and Chelsea. Granted, with the (absolutely hilarious) faltering of Chelsea and Liverpool at the moment, you guys do have a chance of getting into that group. I would like to think we do as well, but years of being a West Ham fan has taught me that I would be more than content with top half for now.

you don't know for certain they didn't to be honest haha the fact they've been on the receiving end of one of those challenges makes me think they've always held the view. Good to know there's actually one sane west ham fan who actually appreciates football as a contact sport!

i don't think it should have been red but i'm just sad about the way the sport is going regarding the outlawing of good tackles.

Those teams have always had ludicrous amounts of money to spend season after season for years now, with the new TV deal even mid-table prem clubs will be a more attractive proposition than some of europe's best for those talented money grabbing footballers. I think and hope it will make the league more of a contest. I don't agree with people's opinions that it means they will pull further apart ... especially not when you spend money like liverpool do.

Passed me by that. Any examples?

Kieron Dyer and Jack Collison being a few examples. We have also cleared Andy Carroll to play earlier than he was ready for a few times. Granted some of these injuries are just unfortunate for injury prone players, but Collison for example released a book and mentioned how he thinks our medical team had a part in his injuries throughout his career.
