2017/18 James McCarthy

If he stays fit there's more than room for him in this squad.

Gives us a bite and agression in midfield that we just don't have enough of.

That being said, we've lost every game since he came back from injury.

Make of that what you will...

He is a nasty piss stained pigeon fiddler but he has an Irish passport and will always refer to "us" when he talks about Ireland.

Would you class Mo Farah or Chris Froome as British? I would.

It's all very pedantic to be honest. McCarthy plays for the country of his choice as he is entitled too due to dual citizenship. Any campaign or flippant Internet tomfoolery to the contrary is at best pathetic and at worst whiffs of sectarianism.

I wonder why he doesn't feel Scottish......

Disgusting slur on the character of the lad. He says he's Irish. His family is Irish and he holds an Irish passport but seemingly you know better.

Funny how if James was black you wouldn't dare question his nationality - e.g. John Barnes and Jamaica and dozens of others.

Lads, this is a thread about James McCarthy. Why are you bringing religion and race into it??

Have thought all along that Alardyce would like him as a player. I think Koeman would have liked him too tbh

In McCarthy (if he can stay fit) and Gueye, there is a lot of energy and bite in midfield - I'd prefer to see those two together in midfield than I would see Schneiderlin in the side

My worry is that we'll see the three of them together at times and if this happens you just can't see where a goal is coming from

Everyone, but @dublinbluenose and @GrumpyBlue in particular...

Keep the thread on the player, not his religion, politics, nationality or anything else nothing to do with his footballing ability... this perpetual arguing about whether he's Scottish or Irish is boring, tedious and downright annoying.

Keep it to football !!!!

Excellent, i want a Scottish flag in the background of McCarthy to show his country of birth.

@GrandOldTeam can you have this as the image behind McCarthy please.

220px-Flag_of_Scotland_%28navy_blue%29.svg.png

Probably the same amount as Judas got paid off the Romans for selling Jesus out for.

Just to let you know, if any faux irish want him to host your faux Saint Patricks Day party please send me a PM.

His country is Scotland, he put the country that he got a passport for, from a box of lucky charms before us.

Playing football and not being a traitor to his country of birth.

The traitor remark is clearly referring to his choice of national team, which is obviously linked to sectarian and religious issues.

I'm not having a debate about it. End of.

Correct, probably has a point to prove as he probably thinks he is twice the player as scheids who is probably on twice the money that he is.

He's Scottish. He plays international football for Ireland.

This thread is for player performances, not politics in any way.

Thanks as always for your vigilance Andy, like the Lee Carsley of the forum.

..I still have concerns about the curse of the hamstring. In the current squad, we look better when he plays but I would be tempted if the right offer came in because I fear the next spell on the sidelines is around the corner.

Got to disagree.

After losing Stones, Lukaku and Barkley - not to mention Coleman to his long-term injury - then I'd say we've only got McCarthy left alongside Pickford that is in any way close to Top 4 material (Baines is past it).

Keep the lad fit and healthy and his class will come through - nicely set alongside a bit of steel that's otherwise missing from the team.

To be honest Andy, it is @Moomin is the worst offender here.

He keeps goading our Irish fans with his snide remarks about Jimmy Mac's choice of which team to represent at international level, sommat which is bugger all to do with anybody but James himself, and that is what sets these altercations off.

I have said to him in the past that it is just old, stale and boring now.

Mark me.....he will soon be goading our new Turkish members about Cenk Tosun being a traitor to Das Fatherland because he plays for Turkey :pint2:

Oh....and I am really glad to see Jimmy Mac back in the team and playing so well ;)

Back-seat moderation?

Really unsavoury this, particularly after @Groucho and @AndyC have asked it to be stopped.

You're not adverse to some pretty nasty comments yourself.

..’keeping the lad fit and healthy’ is my concern, Charlie. If we are able to do so he’s worth his place in this side but my fear is another long-term absence. Last season he was certainly playing within himself and looking very ordinary until the game against Arsenal when he took the choke out and was outstanding. The next game was the Derby where he was full-on again for an hour before breaking down.
