It WAS Benitez's doing though. he obviously has never fancied him.

He was injured for that game, what does him sitting in the stands do for us?

Loads of players ask to be taken off if they don't feel right.

He is absolutely injury prone but I have never bought this idea that he didn't care about playing. He has ended up in some footballing backwater for that very reason, he wanted to play.

Ask yourself the question, why didn't a top club want him?

He didn't end up in Qatar for the love of playing, that's BS. He ended up there because they paid his astronomical wage demands.

Top (or decent, similar to our level anyway) clubs did want him. We didn't sell him until the transfer window was closed in Europe.

Rodriguez obviously cares about his role in the Colombia side so was left with no choice but to go to Qatar rather than rot in our reserves because of our vindictive mess of a manager at the time.

His wages were not astronomical, they went up on a weekly basis normally in line with how "bothered" he looked. He was on about 5 billion a week by the end and was taking regular naps in the centre circle by the end according to some.

All this started to ramp up after about 3 games when the old "doesnt track back enough" stuff started to happen. This of course ignored the fact that he always made himself available to receive the ball no matter where we were on the pitch.

That's a lie!!!
He loved the city!
He even looked out of the window of the taxi to look at the Liverbuilding on his way to the airport!

He wanted loads of cash to look good in a rubbish league.

Third paragraph spot on

This feels like a non-story. Would he rather be playing for Everton (or any team in a big European league) than playing with absolute rubbish in Qatar? Probably. Would he take a penny less on his salary to do so? That’s the real question.

The issues with Rafael are obvious but there are plenty of others at the club who will know what really went on when he basically disappeared under Carlo. I doubt there’s any appetite to have him back.

He always made himself available to receive the ball!! Didn’t he think to try and intercept the oppositions passes or God forbid try and put a solid tackle in? Of course not, silly me, you didn’t expect a player of the Colombians calibre to actually try and tackle a man!!

He was boss, but only when he could be bothered.

Undoubtedly probably one of the most talented players to wear the shirt, but for me, knowing full well we had to win to stand a chance of Europe on the last day (even if it would have been in vein), he was too busy flying home.

Whether he was a talent or not, so you really think James. Would be who we could rely on in a relegation scrap?

If he came back on a 2 year deal at half the salary I’d have him, but not a chance am I paying £200k to a fella who couldn’t be assed and didn’t even know who we were playing at the start of the year.

Benitez was a huge problem, but it’s concerning thag so many players are now scapegoating him. Regardless of how bad we are… Lampard will have still had 15 games to fix this, and the players will be at fault if we mess up.

great post. Some Evertonians need to wake up - hero worship players like Lukaku, James for what??? they turn up when they feel like it.

Our squad is riddled with a culture hangover that Lampard has clearly identified - players who can con fans with interviews....... THESE PLAYERS HAVE HAD MANAGER AFTER MANAGER SACKED!!!

We never just became a bad team under Benitez - that was there well before him. Ancellotti never had the resolve to deal with this lot - he no doubt instructed his agent to get him out of dodge.

The biggest issue the issue Rafael gave us is the excuse these players wanted to hide behind. Lets not pretend Digne was a kay player either - an awful defender who used attacking stats to kid people. Never seen a full back allow so many crosses in to the box - Villa fans have quickly sussed him out.

That lot across the park have the likes of Van Dyke Milner, Henderson, Robertson to put manners on players - who do we have??? 60 grand Seamus who stick his ears out to the fans cos he doesnt think a team should get criticised for playing at a level that gets a club relegated. Ahhh but he looked emotional after we beat Leeds only to stink the gaff out against Southampton......... when Gordon looks like our leader then you know what that says about the so called senior players.

In theory; of course I would have him back. Quality player, undeniable ability on the ball and would elevate our front line and increase our goal output

Pay him Iwobi's wages per week and give him a ridiculous goal/assist bonus of £40k or some such nonsense. See how much he strives to start and affect games then

In practice, sadly I think that ship has sailed. Such a shame
