2020/21 James Rodriguez

Even a fee of £10-12 million benefit us I would hope someone like Athletico or a Napoli type club would be interested.

Had PSG signed Kean for actual money we would have been alright this summer!
Any fee would help, but like Real last summer we'd be relieved to be free of his wage.

He's a luxury we can ill afford. Unfortunately he'll never be a 25 game a season man.

If he can help us win the 20 games a season he could play in, how is that a luxury we can ill afford? He's one of the best players to ever pull on an Everton shirt - and before anyone says, yes... I remember the 80's.

You tell Diego Simeone that his Athletico Madrid sides play like Wimbledon or Ranieri that his title winning Leicester side were long ball over the top merchants.

Fans like yourself are still living in the 80's mate - we aint good enough anymore to win shiny stuff outplaying the opposition we have to find another way.
Simeone has a squad of world class players to play that way and that Leicester team was full of quality too.

Vardy, Mahrez and Kante aside who were the quality you speak of?

They had a back 4 of Simpson, Wes Morgan and kin Fuchs mate.

Simeone's early Athletico teams also were not full of star quality compared to the likes of Real Madrid and Barca.

In no universe will you see Everton win an FA Cup out playing a Man City/RS/Chelsea off the park - we could out fight them, tactically out think them, out work them but players like James, Iwobi and Gomes haven't the physicality, pace, energy, work rate or mentality to achieve that.

It is. It's why even before Rafael became boss the noise from the club was that we'd listen to offers for him. He's not on the transfer list but he's one we wouldn't stand in the way of leaving.

Yes there's an issue between Rafael and the player (which I think is purely down to personalities than anything bad), but anyone at the club who's on £100k or more a week is generally open to leave. FFP is one of the reasons why rather than it being forced to sell them.

You think if Carlo stayed James would have gone? As I don't. That means it isn't really a financial decision. We've halved the cost of what we pay our manager, Bernard has gone, the 160k we were paying Walcott and Bolasie last season has gone. We could have another 100k+ player removed this season too.

Sure to make the PL budget restrictions we could try and sell the whole team but at the end of the day if they were that concerned they would sell Richarlison or DCL not on the cheap but less than they would have wanted. Or at least Kean - sell him for 25 million and that is like 3-4 years of Rodriguez wages + whatever he is on.

If they get rid of James it's more to do with a) does he fit in with the managers plans, b) how much time he stays injury free and c) if you can sell him for 10 million then he's cost us next to nothing and therefore it's good business IF he has no plans to commit to a 3rd year, as come January you would be looking at a replacement anyhow.

Yep you're right.

But I suspect the current manager has ideas of how we play when not in possession and James certainly won't fit in with that.

Whatever his wage (90/140/200) it's a lot to carry for the hope of meaningful contribution. And yes, I'm well aware we have several others on high wages who contribute less. We can't get rid of them either.

I'm also aware it's highly likely the Echo printed todays piece after a request came from the club, but for a player to miss 9 of the last 14 games through injury AFTER being given the whole festive period off to be strong for the second half is poor. Followed up by the Colombian national team deciding that he's not fit enough to represent them.

It's a pity, I'd have loved to see him play but I just can't see him staying here. He'll leave on a free/nominal fee.

As if you're putting James in the Gomes and Iwobi category.

Atletico have had a team of top class players for nearly a decade now. Pretending we can play that way with the current squad is just miles off the mark, and they always had a player who made something from nothing.

How is James Rodriguez going to out work or out fight anyone?

Man City have 11 faster, quicker, stronger versions of James on the pitch.

We can't even out play Sheffield Utd at home these days (with James on the pitch).

We need another direction and that is one that means booting the slow, no energy, no paced physically/mentally weak players and bringing in pace and power with the right mentality.

If Rodriguez leaves and Everton go into the new season without significantly strengthening the team then benitez, brands and moshiri deserve everything coming their way.

You know things are desperate when you look back at blue bill's time in charge with a hint of fondness.

Tells you enough about how the football will look next season doesn't it.

I'm dreading it. Sit back, try and soak it up and hope for a break. Great.

Mentally weak players?

So all of them then?

This squad of players cant even out play relegated Fulham.

Any type of expansive "exciting" Potterball will see us back where we were under Koeman & Silva - the bottom 3.

You advocate an 80s style of play but I'm stuck in that decade. OK, mate.
