I wouldn’t mind but we’d get at most £10m for James, that doesn’t cover us to replace him anywhere near the same quality, that doesn’t even cover us to get a right back, so essentially we’d be getting rid of him just to get rid of him. Relying on the losers left in the squad to replace him or else some bargain bin signing.

Unless he marched into Benitez’ office and demanded to leave and never play, which he didn’t he’s even been quoted on his twitch saying he’d have no issue staying, then Benitez is already undermining fans’ desires before the season even starts and making it about him and not the team. As loads of others have said if you can’t even find a place in a match day squad for someone of James’ quality then you’re a poor manager.

Also not to talk about the elephant in the room but we’ve also basically lost our only other “starting” attacking midfielder so we have literally no natural attacking player aside from strikers. I understand that’s obviously beyond the club’s control but maybe the smart thing to do in this nightmare would be not to sell our only creative player, who also happens to be a positive marketing dream and can be made the number 10 in a positive spin on the situation, probably making big kit revenue. I’m not exactly a PR expect but yknow it’s an idea, something that the club is sorely lacking by the looks of it.

I'd be looking to move at least 6 others before I looked at selling James, 1 season left on his deal, let the fans see him, keep marketing him to the hilt and when he plays he wins you points. Iwobi useless and offers nothing. Townsend hasn't got half the talent James has but can rotate with him. Gray similar situation. Gomes useless offer nothing. He who shall not be named likely to be sacked.

Our two best players have just come back from International duty. One has had 5 days off all summer. Team players who may want to play on a bigger stage but dont go sulking.

Yet we won more games without James than with him.... so maybe those 15 goals he contributed was at the expense of more goals conceded as its like playing with 10 men when we dont have the ball?

That claim just felt so unlikely I had to go through the stats, out of our wins last season James played in 8 of them and didn't play in 7 of them, so it's close, but he contributed to 15 goals, turning defeats into draws, turning draws into victories, out of our points total of 59 last year he was involved in games where we got 33 of those points. I think it's massively important to note that he is not some sort of lazy passenger.
