I dont want Winks mate! He's a slightly above average player but until you wake up and smell the coffee that we haven't the dough to bring in a CL quality midfielder you'll never be happy with any player coming in this summer.

Any improvement on Gomes/Delph/Davies is acceptable in my eyes.
If you don't want Winks then stop talking about us, Everton, buying him then.

Ah, so someone will buy them then, but only after they have rinsed us and run down their contracts. Great, let's all fume at our most gifted player James then! ;)

Getting someone on a free isn't 'buying them'.

James wants to leave and couldn't care less about the club. Interesting double standards regarding him and Kean, both have a very similar attitude and would leave today smiling if they could but for some reason James isn't in the wrong?

There's no sense in the James argument, those that aren't happy can't see the wood for the trees because they just want to see him live, irrespective of what he does or doesn't do.

Any player would leave us today if they felt something better was available to them, that is the nature of the modern game - a very few exceptions aside.

Who is more likely to score or set up a goal, to win you a game, etc? It's fairly obvious when you look at our squad.

If you've had a season's worth of evidence from James and you cant see that he's not the answer rather than a problem then you aren't paying close enough attention.

Overall he adds nothing.

Made the difference in quality when we broke our away records in grounds we hadn't won at since Moses was a lad.

The Everton way will be replacing him with Dwight McNeil and then whinging why we don't have quality in the final 3rd.

James is one of the best players in the squad but say Rafael builds his tactics around him for Saturday and then on Saturday morning James decides hes got a 'knock' and misses the game that wouldn't be great would it? The lad is doing everything he can to force a move and he will avoid playing.

Neither Besic and Bolasie have found clubs since leaving us, so at the moment they aren`t getting wages off anyone.

Covid has changed the market.

They're both absolutely shocking thats why. So are Delph and Iwobi. Eventually they'll find MLS clubs or championship clubs.

Hes a good player.

He badly wants to leave and it looks like this will probably have a negative impact on the rest of the team. I am not a fan of Rafael but you can't have a toxic player around who is slating the club all over the media and is pushing for a move.

Its best for all parties if he leaves as he clearly doesn't care and wants to move.
I haven't read one quote from him saying he wants to leave. I have read quite a few saying he is not wanted by RB though.

Does not bode well that attitude for any potential buyer. What club will have him and pay a fee with his medical record. ONe thing for sure as far as I can tell is Real do not want him back and neither does Ancellotti.

Its a little bit more nuanced than Benitez fans v James fans

We cant play James 100 times out of 100 because we know that would cause him injuries or he would get knackered. Thats kind of the issue. People say build the side around him but thats not going to work because he can only start half of matches.

I cant get my head around how we appointed this manager but I see all the issues with James too. There are no easy solutions with a player with constant injuries.

I also think it probably all boils down to the fact he'll want to leave because Ancelotti left. And any player who wants to leave should be moved on because I'm fed up having players who aren't fully committed here.

If he is fully committed then obviously we should keep him. But I think its most likely he wants to leave.

I just think for the final year of his contract, keep him here and see what he can do. For Benitez's faults I do think he'll have a system in place but systems can't do everything and you need sprinkling of talent on top and in James we have a player of the level none of the teams around us now have - since Grealish has gone to City.

So make the most of him. As you say, this obsession with 'build a team around him' isn't needed and can't be done. But the irony is Benitez seems to be intent on using a system that none of our players are really suited to as opposed to one that both James and other players in the squad would seem naturally better fits to.

If - if - we had quality in his position that could come close to replicating his output (and he was way ahead of almost everyone bar GS who played 12 more games than him, fgs James created the 11th most 'big chances' (sitters, in simple terms) in the league last season, and played 10 games fewer than pretty much every other player on that list other than KDB and Grealish) - then I would be more lenient to the club here. But we don't have that quality, and Townsend, Gray and Iwobi have shown nothing on a consistent basis to show they have it in them.

I've run the numbers.

In 26 games in all comps, James created 54 chances. That works out at 2.38 per 90.

In comparison, Townsend created 1.58 per 90 (in 36 games), McNeil (who created 57 chances in total), was at 1.5 per 90 from 40 games. Iwobi down at 1.05 per 90 from 36 games. Gray only created 5 chances but only played 4 times in England (which is what I'm using).

James created 38 chances from open play - more than any of the others. He scored six goals, four more than any of the others and one more than the other four combined in English football last year.

His 14 big chances were four more than McNeil, seven more than Townsend, 10 more than Iwobi and 12 more than Gray.

1,039 of his 1,242 passes were successful (83.66%). He had the best dribble success rate (66.67%) by some distance - Townsend, Gray McNeil and Iwobi all in the 50-60 bracket. He played more minutes than Iwobi, but over less games.

Shooting. He had 41 shots - four more than Townsend (37), 12 more than McNeil (29) and 19 more than Iwobi (22). His shot conversion rate (i.e. getting the shot on target) was at 14.63 per cent, which for a midfielder is bloody good (in comparison all the others below 10 - Iwobi at 9.09 and we know how bad his shooting can be, and McNeil down at 6.9 and Townsend 2.7!

Basically, he's far better than any of them.
