2020/21 James Rodriguez

James is a wonderful talent with an absolute wand of a left foot. Creates chances for fun and is a joy to watch. He is the perfect example of the saying that if something looks too good to be true then it usually is.

There is a reason why we were able to sign him for £20m and why he never made it at Madrid or Bayern. It wasn't a lack of talent, we haven't discovered some hidden gem. He simply cannot stay fit. He is fragile and rarely gets 100% fit.

In the last 3 seasons plus the start of this one he has had 17 injuries or illnesses.

But he also has 3 goals and 4 assists in 8 games for us so... arsed.

We need to stop flogging him. Just stood in the same spot for the last 20 mins of his game. Didn’t take set pieces, obviously not really fit. Let him rest and come back when he’s fit !
He won't be getting any rest now anyway with heading off with Colombia so I don't know how it would have benefitted us by not playing him today, I'd take a half fit James before any of our other options.

Hindsight is great but we dropped the ball by playing him in the Southampton game, that's the one he definitely shouldn't have been playing.

He’s just really not a winger. Play him as a 10 where he can feed DCL to slot, and doesn’t have to defend as heavily. Also make us less reliant on crosses from wide.

woth the player we have 4-4-2 with him as a 10 might be our best formation. This unfortunately means that iwobi will be playing RW a lot which is why I can’t bring myself to suggest the change in formation

Rushed him back twice now to no effect, just because we're desperate and have no other options. Sooner or later it'll bite us on the arse and he'll pick up a bad injury because of it.

The problem with playing James , and I am not for one second turning on him. He’s the most talented player with the ball that we have and probably the best I’ve seen pkay for us since the prem began. The problem is that teams just shift the ball and double up on the RB. I mean our main tactic is to get it to James and for him to pick out digne and have him and richy doubled up on the opposing RB or to get richy 1 on 1 with him. That simple tactic hit us top of the league and scoring goals for fun. We needed a player like James to do that... opposition teams don’t as James doesn’t defend... not even a little .... so they can perform the same tactic but with players of inferior quality and the can do it regularly. He obviously need him to play , so we need to find a formation and position for him. Number 10 on violist suits him but does it suit our CM and wide option? Does it limit richy? Can Alan and douciure play in a midfield 2? Who plays wide right? Will our defence be exposed? I don’t know but right now 4-4-2 against decent opposition seem to be the most suitable decision for me. There isn’t many changes that could make us worse atm . We are not scoring or creating , we aren’t good in possession , we aren’t quick on the break and we are conceding 2 goals a game. We have to make a change remedy at least some of those problems before we lose touch and the season is over in jan when we get knocked out of the FA cup as usual

You should be arsed though.

James is fantastic and a joy to watch but it comes at a cost. Out of possession we are a player short and get out gunned in midfield because he is a passenger. He doesn't trackback and protect his full back, and he doesn't press when we don't have the ball.

He makes up for it because he is a wonderful player and his output is incredible. If he was bulletproof and playing week in week out then it might be a price worth paying. However, when he is out or not fully fit then we have no back up.

He wasn't fully fit however our midfield.just never really got going yesterday and he grew more into the game when he went more central.

I'd like to see him with Allen and Doucoure in the middle.

We have Gordon, Bernard, Iwobi and Richarlison back out wide so he can pull the strings in the middle.

Are you suggesting we replace him then with a less injury prone player?

It doesn’t have to be one or the other. People are just pointing out that defensively we start with 9 men with him and sig/Gomes in the team. He gets a free pass defensively because of his output. But when his output is zilch then fans will question things.
Im a huge fan but there’s plenty of players in the premier league with his output and ten times more work rate.

My body clock is ruined, so I woke up really early today and ended up watching a load of Everton videos from yesteryear, and it turns out that James Rodriguez is not the first Everton player that is capable of completing a good pass. We’ve actually had a few over the years.

Andy Hinchcliffe certainly knew how to deliver a set piece as well, but I never remember him being absolved from the responsibility to run during a football game.

It’s a bit of a new one for me this, being called boss whilst you neglect to run on the football pitch.

Maybe I’m getting old, but I’ve always thought that running was a pretty fundamental aspect of playing football, especially if you’re playing right mid.

It's got naff all to do with him not being fully fit.

The lad is better than the rest of our team playing at 50% fitness anyway.

Teams are doubling up on him because, apart from Dom - who is dealt with by the CBs - we have literally no other attacking threat driving into the area, either from midfield or the left - unless Richarlison is playing.

He hasn't got the pace to get away from two or three players every time he has the ball.
