2020/21 James Rodriguez

I think its time to put James in the middle. I liked him out wide to begin with, defenders couldn't cope with him coming in, his cross field balls to digne and richarlison, but the opposition are also using it as a means to attack us, and Coleman/James is not a very strong defensive right side. In the middle, James gets protected by 3 central midfielders. 4231 in the second half after Iwobi came on - Everton did better. Iwobi on the Right, Bernard on the left. The second half was a dead heat against a much faster more athletic Man U team, and they only scored that goal on the break, and they had one big chance i think Rashford or Martial missed 1 on 1 with the keeper.

But I don't think James was fit anyway - and he'll be better after the break. I don't mind if he goes as long as he's not completely injured. Where do people draw the line if people are skipping internationals for little minor bumps, or need more time for rest. Just have to trust James that he won't over push himself.

He hasn't been fit since the 2014 World Cup. He is a magical player let down by a fragile body.

Did you see the whack he took? Hardly fragile.

By the way it's not just James' performance that has dropped, the whole team look a bit lethargic and out of ideas. At this point in time we need a multi focal attack, the opposition can't double mark Richarlison and James (while keeping tags on DCL). I'd imagine he will look a lot better when Richarlison is back. Whether we ever regain the collective swagger of the first four games is up for debate though. We appear to be a confidence side that will have to rebuild that over the next few games and while without it could get ropey.

It’s not the James of 2014. There’s a reason he cost what he did and signed a short term deal. A succession of injuries and lay off periods has left his body knackered. The talent is the same, what isn’t the same is his body. It’s not the body of a 30 year old. He’s not lazy, he just cannot get around the field like he used to.

The best he’s looked so far was against Spurs, a team that didn’t lift a leg and allowed him as much space and time as he wanted. Plus that being the opening game meant he was fresher. As the season wears on it becomes harder in terms of stamina, plus most teams won’t down tools like Spurs did. The Premier League is totally unsuited to a player who is physically shot. Just watched Villa run riot against Arsenal, James could never keep up with the pace of a game like that.

Kaka was another who was knackered after a series of injuries. From being the best player on the planet in 2007 to a man who was done 3 years later. In a slower paced game/league the moments of quality will appear, but most PL games are not slow paced.

Which for me is why he needs to sack off internationals.

He'll be fine once he is fit and gets Richardlisson to play his game. If they double him he can release it to the left. If Richy is causing mayhem, they give James space and he does even more damage
The main problem is our defence.
1.pickford not coming for crosses in the 6 yard box.

2.coleman is finished.we need RB in January or play holgate there till end of season.

3.bring Godfrey in to CB and rotate the rest.

4.433 doesn't work.play 442,hamez in a no 10 role.drop siggy bring in Gordon to left wing, iwobi or Bernard on the right.

Buy right winger in January if possible.

I know mate, he only looked good against Spurs didn't he and wasn't the best player on the pitch by some distance against Palace away, West Brom at home, Brighton at home & West Ham in the Cup.

Those goals and assists weren't real and we just imagined them all.

Even after he took a whack to the Ballsack against the rs he had the absolute cheek to lay a chance on a plate for Richarlison as well.

What a lazy, past it, has been he is eh.

Been a bit concerned about him for a while now. Seems to be a one trick pony. Gets the ball out wide, comes inside onto his left, time and time again. Opposing teams onto him now.
I've noticed exactly the same thing , I remember when Depay signed for Man United and scored 3 in his first 3 games -3 identical goals from the left side but offered little else..he was quickly found out and didn't last long

He hasn’t been fit since the derby. Our joke of a physio team seem to be on a mission to ruin some of our players.

What a load of nonsense! If he is not "fit" then he shouldn't have played. As if professional medical staff would not be absolutely committed to ensuring the welfare of some of the highest paid sportspeople in the world.

Your pointing the finger in the wrong direction. I would be more worried by the fact that according to Carlo, James asked to come off "because he was tired". Fitness is the responsibility of the player not the physio team, who are there to assist and advise. Not acceptable for a player of his quality and experience to either be not properly prepared for the game or push himself.

He may not be the most naturally gifted footballer to have ever graced our shirt, but could you ever imagine someone like Seamus asking to be substituted for the same reason - he'd be embarrassed, as should James.

James said before the game that he was 100%

Carlo said in his presser that he doubted that James was 100% but either way, he was going to play

It's because he's miles better than what we have

Our main issue is James carrying an injury and absolutely having to play, but also Carlo choosing to have Tosun to lump on rather than, say, Gordon, who could come on and run and create a chance.

Amazing, fingers pointed and accusations made of James Rodriguez

I think people expected him to be able to do it all himself after his first few games.

Really don't even think it's his fitness that's the main issue. The lad's got 2-3 players on him at all times because teams know we have zero threat coming from anywhere else if they can isolate Dom.

What a joke of a thread this is turning into!
His first five league performances for us and West Ham in the cup were an absolute joy to watch and is the most I’ve maybe ever enjoyed watching Everton play and I say that as a 32 year old!
Without Richarlison teams knew that all they had to do was stop James and they’d stop us playing so they did.
Against United he was even trying to drop into weird deep center mid positions just to get on the ball and try and dictate but it just didn’t work because we had nothing going on in front of him. So far, in my opinion he was outstanding and has just turned in two average performances. If that isn’t value for a free transfer you’re nuts.
