Again though, you can't just put that Burnley goal down to him. In fact, he's probably the least responsible out of all of them.

If you give a professional footballer 5 yards of space 25 yards out, with your defender turning his back, then expect them to be able to pick a spot.

Not clogging up this thread anymore with Pickford stuff.

What do you mean he hasn't played in 10?

The problem is though Toff is his positioning, I don't know why but when he's facing a shot from distance or a free - kick he takes a couple of steps in the opposite direction (I've been watching him closely and he always seems to do this) to where the ball is actually going and because of that he looks unbalanced when he does attempt a save. In theory if he doesn't take those couple of steps then he may have a better chance of reaching a shot.

I know mate, it is an issue. Surely the coach has to have picked up on this too, and surely they have to be working on it.

If he hasn't, then the coach isn't up to scratch. Given it's seeing us concede goals/nearly concede goals, then surely it has to be a priority for him to stop it.

For the Mount free-kick, it nearly cost us. I do think he'd have had it covered but if he hasn't taken that step, then he gets there with ease.

Anyway, wrong thread!

When's that ever stopped us on here Toff. lol

1. His step to the right on the early Chelsea fk was poor. But he got across to make the save. Simiarly, with the Mount one against the post, even with the step, he most likely would have got there. I watched it back closely as I was writing a piece on the game. I agree that his positioning was poor and point me to the direction where I've said I'm happy with him. But he's earned us a point v Burnley and made an outstanding save to deny James against Chelsea. He also kept us in it v Leeds.

2. That punch wasn't bad. The reactions of Mina and Godfrey to it landing to Mount was what bothered me. Pickford made the decision to come. He showed bravery. We've asked for decisiveness from him, and he showed it. Mina and Godfrey both watched Mount's chip go over them - Mina in particular was on the six-yard line yet didn't react at all.
Sorry I never said that you were happy with him. I was merely pointing out his mistakes again which could have cost us the game.
I have been saying for ages that Pickford is terrible on corners and crosses and saying that he needs training on coming for them. I've no problem with him coming for them but hopefully he will start dealing with crosses in a more confident manner.
At the moment he is making basic mistakes in most games. One of saves at Burnley was from a header from a corner from the 6 yard box. I personally think any corners which arrive on the 6 yard box should have the keeper coming out to catch or punch it.
Against Leeds I think their first a player is put through and Pickford comes out and is caught in no man's land. Fortunately we had 2 men behind Pickford when the leeds player put the ball past Pickford. Think that game he also came for a couple of crosses, realised he couldn't get the ball and retreats, especially the one where the Leeds player heads against the bar.
Pickford cam make good reaction saves but until he cuts out the mistakes he will never be good enough.
I'm hoping that he starts to calm down, cuts out most of his mistakes and the criticism recedes. But he has a very long way to go.
This should really be on the pickford thread so I will end it now

I’m probably in the minority but I’m starting to feel like his best position is still out on that RW, I think it gives him that extra yard before he’s closed down as teams can’t commit too many players to him with the pace of Richarlison wide left.

Centrally he just wouldn’t get the same time on the ball, no matter how quick of mind he is.

He's easier to mark out of the game on the RW, The LB/LM can just double team him every time, if he's central he has a bit of a free roam and can harder to track if they aren't alert all the time, Depends on the opposition really.

I think it depends on who we play and how we set up. All that is currently known is that he is magic wherever he plays.

Double edged sword this - I think playing there gives him more freedom - he naturally faces goal on his stronger left foot and it's difficult for a full back to follow him inside when he's given that licence to drift wherever he likes. On the downside, he offers almost zero defensively and we only have a right back behind him, so we are easy to target on that side. I think Carlo's 343 experiment was an attempt to remedy this. If you play him as a number 10, he's less easy to exploit defensively, but he's also easier to close down and mark. On song he's the most talented player I think I can remember seeing here, but you have to take the rough with the smooth with him - wherever you get him into the side, there will be a negative which can be exploited.
