Not sure about "still" - haven't been on this forum much through quarantine tbf mate, just been watching the games. Not sure what the discourse is like around the man. Very open to being wrong, I just vividly remember us being worse off defensively with him in the team, Coleman getting up and down without defensive support etc, despite being electric going forward. If I'm wrong for those reasons you laid out fair enough and I hope that's the case.

There has been a prolonged discussion about luxury players and whether we concede goals because James isn't covering all the ground. It just isn't really the case. I mean how many goals came down the right this season anyway? Our defending in a back four has been a similar level James or not. The biggest difference in a few of these games from before is Pickford making one save instead of zero and his weekly screw up hitting the post.

I mean we've clearly defended differently/far better as a unit in the last few games, though.

We're sitting deeper, restricting space in behind (that benefits Mina and Keane) and since we're playing two CBs at FB, they aren't overlapping as much. In turn, the midfielders aren't having to push wide to fill in the gaps.

Nothing to do with James, really, but we're definitely defending differently than how we were.

We just won 3 games against Chelsea, Leicester and Arsenal without him mate. Deservedly too.

I'll be glad when he's back though.
