It's all a bit sus when the manager is saying 3 games ago that he's almost ready and "back for the next game", up to even the United game where Carlo then moved on to "if he doesn't make the United game then he's ready for Sheffield United". Now all of a sudden it's shifted once more to "he's not available for the next few games". Very, very weird.
But there's about a week difference in between those games. In a normal season he might have made it with a view that he could take it easy before the next game.

Has been out at long as van Dijk so far given he wasn't able to perform since then even while playing. Let's hope it's not a bad injury, but it's puzzling how the injury keeps getting longer and longer.

Thinking back to the 80s, when we played matches as regularly on inferior pitches with smaller squads, we lost great players every so often and still succeeded in spite of everything. Adrian Heath, Paul Bracewell, and Neville Southall were all out for extended periods. We coped - to say the least. Until we can get back to that level of squad strength, we'll always be using injuries as an excuse for our miserable squad-building efforts. A squad set up to crash the top six simply shrugs off the loss of players like Digne and Allan. Sure, they will be missed, but we've got to have enough about us to slot an adequate replacement in. To be fair to James, it's nigh on impossible to replace a player of his ability, but we've coped rather well overall in the last few games. I suspect Sheffield United, like the League Cup game, might be a bridge too far though as the squad just isn't up to dealing with the loss of our four best players. Even the 80s side would have found that a struggle. Back into the market we must go...

Did I imagine the game against Burnley when he was really good?

It's a different injury and it hasn't been that long.
