Everything would be fine if journalists just asked some proper questions. There’s just loads of speculation now when all it takes is “ok Carlo, has there been a setback? It’s just that you said a few games ago that he may be back for the next game?”

They have asked that in every presser over the last 10 days.

Carlo's answer is exactly the same each time.

No set back, they're taking it day by day. It's a minor issue but he needs to be in training with the team first to be judged as available.

The team aren't training right now, which is restricting the time James has to get in there.

It's pretty simple.

It's a minor injury coming at our busiest time. Just think, if he'd had done this in November, he might have missed two-three games. Instead, he'll miss six purely because of the schedule.

Have to disagree with you here mate. I’m fairly sure that journos can respond to answers with further questions. I’m not saying his injury is bad, and yes the timing of it means he’ll miss more games than at other parts of the season. That wasn’t my point. My point is that Carlo did say in previous press conferences that he was unavailable for the match but would follow it with a comment that he would potentially make the next match. That hasn’t happened and now he’s further ruled him out of another two. It does appear that the injury is worse than what they thought

But they just keep getting the same answer.

And as you say yourself, Carlo kept stressing it was potential, hopeful. He stressed that all along.

James is in individual training and has been for a week. But that's all he can do right now.

The team does their 'tactical' sessions the day before a game. At the moment, with our fixture list, there is literally no other time available for anything over than recovery and then tactical sessions.

So how can James prove he's overcome the issue? He can't, until there's a full team training session.

At a guess, our last week will have looked something like this

Sunday - recovery/off
Monday - training (James still not judged as ready to be in full training)
Tuesday - tactical session, run through with the squad for the Utd game, so James not involved
Wednesday - you'd guess James would be in working but may have been given extra recovery time
Thursday - recovery after the Utd game. Perhaps some light work, but very doubtful
Friday (today) - tactical session/squad training for Saturday's game
Saturday - travel from FF to Sheffield
Sunday - recovery/tactical session for the City game (that may even take place on Monday morning!)

Where exactly in that schedule would you be able to fit a player who has just been doing individual rehab back in?

If he'd have been able to train with the team on Monday or Tuesday this week, he'd probably be available. He clearly wasn't ready to do that, so there's really no other opportunity until after the City game.

I’m fairly sure that Carlo would know the training session schedule ahead of his answers. I’m also fairly sure that the fitness team assess james individually and inform Carlo of his fitness. Ancelotti doesn’t seem the type of manager to need someone’s fitness being proven or not. If he gets told he’s fit, he’s in.

Carlo has kept saying 'we are taking it day by day' - which will be what the advice of the medical staff is.

We have two games now in three days.

Anyway, enjoy what's left of Chrimbo, hopefully we get the points tomorrow.

What’s all this now? Pray to god he’s back soon, we’re lightweight without him.
We are lightweight with him. Allen is the key to a solid team. Luca Digne is essential to get the best from Dom . James can turn a game with a great bit of skill, but make no mistake, he is a nice to have if the rest do the hard miles and allow him the space to be creative. He is a lightweight but a very skilled one.

Thinking back to the 80s, when we played matches as regularly on inferior pitches with smaller squads, we lost great players every so often and still succeeded in spite of everything. Adrian Heath, Paul Bracewell, and Neville Southall were all out for extended periods. We coped - to say the least. Until we can get back to that level of squad strength, we'll always be using injuries as an excuse for our miserable squad-building efforts. A squad set up to crash the top six simply shrugs off the loss of players like Digne and Allan. Sure, they will be missed, but we've got to have enough about us to slot an adequate replacement in. To be fair to James, it's nigh on impossible to replace a player of his ability, but we've coped rather well overall in the last few games. I suspect Sheffield United, like the League Cup game, might be a bridge too far though as the squad just isn't up to dealing with the loss of our four best players. Even the 80s side would have found that a struggle. Back into the market we must go...
Not too bothered about James. Allan and Digne though are critical.

He seems to have just vanished off the face of the earth recently. Hasn't been pictured in training in ages and even his social media has been quieter than usual..

Call it 'bad timing' with regards to his supposed lack of fitness, but you can't argue that this really isn't an ideal situation at all given the congested fixtures..
